Tipologizando Identidades: reflexiones sobre la construcción de identidades étnicas en la Arqueología del NOA

Abstract

Es posible condensar la interpretación del pasado prehispánico construido durante más de la mitad del siglo XX -y que sirvió como base para la construcción científica posterior-, en una fuerte correspondencia entre identidad étnica y cultura material. La etnicidad se manifestaba en un conjunto de ítems materiales dejados por una unidad social altamente homogénea, donde estas características funcionaban a modo de marcadores de diferencias. Sin embargo, el análisis -en este caso estilístico- del registro alfarero de momentos Tardíos e Inka del Noroeste Argentino nos da cuenta de un proceso significativamente más complejo, donde la práctica identitaria se manifiesta como un proceso dinámico, fluido y contingente. La combinación y recombinación en una misma pieza de elementos del diseño asociados tradicionalmente con manifestaciones estilísticas definidas (Belén, Santa María, Famabalasto), parece ser la norma más que la excepción en las representaciones tardías. Proponemos entonces, reevaluar la construcción de identidades tomando como eje estructurador el papel de la práctica social.

Translated abstract

It is possible to summarize the interpretations about the prehispanic past that were built over the latest half of the twentieth century -which helped as a foundation for the following scientific development-, as a strong connection between the ethnic identity and the material culture. Ethnicity is manifested through an aggregate of material items that were left behind by a highly homogeneous social unity, to which these characteristics functioned as distinctions. However, the analysis -in this case, a stylistic analysis-of the pottery records for the late and Inka epochs, account for a significantly more complex process, in which the identitary practice is manifested as a fluent, contingent and dynamic process. The combination and recombination in a same fragment of design elements that were traditionally related to defined stylistic manifestations (Belén, Santa María, Famabalasto), seems to be more of a rule rather than an exception in the late epoch representations. Hence, it is proposed a revaluation regarding the construction of identities, taking as a leading axis the structural role of the social practices.
