      Plasma Vitamin E and Blood Selenium Concentrations in Norwegian Dairy Cows: Regional Differences and Relations to Feeding and Health

          Abstract

          Plasma α-tocopherol (vit E) and blood selenium (Se) concentrations in February were determined in samples from 314 dairy cows in Norway, selected to provide a representative subset of the Norwegian dairy cow population. Each sample was followed by a questionnaire with information about feeding of the cow at the time of sampling. The results were correlated to herd data and to calving and health data for each cow from the Norwegian Dairy Herd Recording System and the Norwegian Cattle Health Recording System. The mean concentrations were 6.9 μg vit E per ml plasma and 0.16 μg Se per g blood. Both levels were highest in mid lactation. Plasma vit E varied with the amount of silage fed to the cow, while blood Se varied with the amount of concentrates and mineral supplements, and with geographical region. No differences in vit E or Se levels were found between cows with recorded treatments for mastitis, parturient paresis or reproductive disorders in the lactation during or immediately prior to sampling, and those without such treatments. For ketosis, a small difference in blood Se was found between the groups with or without recorded treatments. It is concluded that winter-fed lactating cows in Norway had an adequate plasma level of vit E and a marginal-to-adequate level of Se.

          Effect of vitamin E and selenium supplementation on incidence of clinical mastitis and duration of clinical symptoms.

          Incidence of clinical mastitis and duration of clinical symptoms for complete lactations were evaluated for 80 cows randomly assigned to one of four groups: vitamin E supplemented- and selenium injected, selenium injected, vitamin E supplemented, and controls. Vitamin E supplementation and selenium injection were during the dry period. Log-linear analysis of incidence data revealed a significant 37% reduction of clinical mastitis by vitamin E. Incidence was not affected by selenium alone, nor was there any evidence for interaction of vitamin E with selenium on incidence. However, duration of clinical symptoms (calendar months clinical/quarter lactating) was reduced by 46% for the selenium group, 44% for the vitamin E group, and 62% for the vitamin E-selenium group as compared to controls. We conclude that dairy cow diets deficient of vitamin E may elevate incidence of clinical mastitis. Selenium deficiency may result in greater duration of clinical symptoms, and selenium may interact with vitamin E. Coliform bacteria and species of streptococcus other than Streptococcus agalactiae were isolated from 70% of the clinical cases.

            Effect of vitamin E supplementation in diets with a low concentration of selenium on mammary gland health of dairy cows.

            Sixty-six cows and heifers (Holsteins and Jerseys) were assigned to one of three treatments at 60 d before anticipated calving. Treatment 1 consisted of 100 IU/d of supplemental vitamin E during the dry period and 100 IU/d during the first 30 d of lactation. Treatment 2 was 1000 IU/d of vitamin E during the dry period and 500 IU/d during lactation. Treatment 3 was 1000 IU/d of vitamin E during the first 46 d of the dry period, 4000 IU/d during the last 14 d of the dry period, and 2000 IU/d during lactation. Plasma concentrations of alpha-tocopherol decreased at calving for cows fed dietary treatments with low or intermediate concentrations of vitamin E, but not for cows fed the high vitamin E treatment. High dietary vitamin E increased concentrations of alpha-tocopherol in blood neutrophils at parturition, but no difference was found for the other two treatments. The percentage of quarters with new infections at calving was not different (32.0%) between cows receiving treatments that contained low and intermediate concentrations of vitamin E but was reduced (11.8%) in cows receiving the high vitamin E treatment. Clinical mastitis affected 25.0, 16.7, and 2.6% of quarters during the first 7 d of lactation for cows receiving the low, intermediate, and high vitamin E treatments, respectively. Cows with plasma concentrations of alpha-tocopherol 3.0 micrograms/ml.

              Requirements of fat-soluble vitamins for dairy cows: a review.

              Knowledge about vitamins has evolved greatly since they were discovered 50 years old. The response variables in those studies were the prevalence of overt signs of deficiency, level of milk production, reproductive performance, and vitamin concentrations in blood and tissues. Since those studies were conducted, milk production per cow has increased substantially, and the feeding and management of cows have changed (less pasture, less forage, and more total confinement). More refined measures of vitamin adequacy have been developed. Immunocompetence may be a useful tool for determining the requirements of some vitamins. Requirements that are based on measures of immune function are usually higher than those that are based on production or reproduction. The current requirements for vitamin D appear to be adequate, but the requirement for vitamin A should be increased by approximately 50% because of differences in bioavailability between beta-carotene and retinyl esters. Based on health data, the vitamin E requirement should be increased at least 500% and perhaps as much as 700% for dry cows and lactating cows.
