          Abstract

          Objetivo: se realizó un estudio dirigido a establecer el estado actual del conocimiento local sobre el uso de plantas medicinales en las comunidades campesinas del área rural de la parroquia San Carlos, Quevedo, Provincia de los Ríos, Ecuador. Materiales y métodos: Entre febrero y mayo del 2014 se establecieron las partes de plantas usadas, tipo de administración, preparación, categorías de uso medicinal tradicional y conocimiento por sexo y rangos de edad. Se determinó el valor de uso de especies (IVU), el conocimiento relativo de la especie por varios informantes (RVU) y el nivel de uso significativo Tramil (UST). Resultados: 43 especies de plantas tuvieron uso medicinal, las hojas fueron las estructuras más utilizadas (76.7%), la forma de preparación principal fue la infusión (83.7%), y la vía de administración más empleada fue la bebida (86.0%). La categoría de uso medicinal mejor representada está relacionada con el sistema gastrointestinal (44,2%). No se encontró diferencias significativas en el conocimiento de las especies de acuerdo al sexo y rango de edad de los informantes. Conclusiones: las plantas medicinales más importantes para la población local fueron: la hierba luisa (Cymbopogon citratus), el orégano (Origanum vulgare) y la hierba buena (Mentha sativa).

          Translated abstract

          Objective: A study to establish the current state of local knowledge on the use of medicinal plants in the farming communities in rural areas of the parish San Carlos Quevedo, province of Los Rios in Ecuador was performed. Materials and methods: Between February and May 2014 parts of plants used, type of administration, preparation, categories of traditional medicinal use and knowledge by sex and age ranges were established. The species use value (IVU), the relative knowledge of the species by several informants (RVU) and the level of significant use Tramil (UST) was determined. Results: It was found that 43 species of plants had medicinal use, the leaves were the structures most commonly used (76.7%), the primary form of preparation was the infusion (83.7%), and the route of administration employed was the drink (86.0%). The best represented medicinal use category is related to the gastrointestinal system (44.2%). No significant differences in the knowledge of species according to sex and age range of the respondents were found. Conclusions: The most important medicinal plants for locals were the lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus), oregano (Origanum vulgare) and peppermint (Mentha sativa).

              The importance of weeds in ethnopharmacology.

              Tropical primary forest is often considered to be the most important habitat for traditional peoples to gather medicinal plants. However, the role of weeds, commonly found in disturbed areas, in traditional medicinal floras has been overlooked. Data are presented showing the significant representation of weeds in the medicinal floras of the Highland Maya in Chiapas, Mexico and in the medicinal flora of Native North Americans as a whole. The frequency with which weeds appear in these pharmacopoeias is significantly larger (P<0.0001) than what would be predicted by the frequency of weed species in general. Explanations based on human ecology and biochemical ecology are presented.
