          Abstract

Abstract The Covid-19 pandemic emerged globally, thus affecting the self-growth of the older population. The aim of this study is to identify and to analyze older adults’ self-growth of two nationalities: Mexican and Portuguese. In this study, 226 elderly people aged 65 years or older and living in the community participated. A cross-cultural qualitative study was performed through a semi-structured interview protocol. Participants were asked about their perception of their self-growth during the pandemic. A content analysis was performed and the central themes were identified. The following themes emerged: (1) Sharing life experiences; (2) Quality affective relationship; (3) Spirituality and religion; (4) Being active; (5) Interest in new projects; and (6) Civic participation. Older participants with Mexican nationality reported that the sharing of life experiences as the most relevant theme, while for the Portuguese participants, having a quality affective relationship was more important. This study showed the heterogeneity of experiences experienced by each culture, highlighting the self-growth of older adults in the pandemic period.

A hands-on guide to doing content analysis

There is a growing recognition for the important role played by qualitative research and its usefulness in many fields, including the emergency care context in Africa. Novice qualitative researchers are often daunted by the prospect of qualitative data analysis and thus may experience much difficulty in the data analysis process. Our objective with this manuscript is to provide a practical hands-on example of qualitative content analysis to aid novice qualitative researchers in their task.

Recovering from the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Focus on Older Adults

As we look toward recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, we overview challenges to be minimized, including economic setbacks, health and well-being effects, and highlighted ageism, racism, and classism. We articulate opportunities to be seized, including increased comfort with technology and online platforms; stronger family and intergenerational connections, renewed energy to combat social isolation; more respect for self-care and time management; increased awareness about the importance of advance directives; and, potentially, increased interest across disciplines to work on issues of aging society. Ongoing efforts to improve policies and programs for longer, healthier lives might now be more productive, as we communicate to consumers, public officials, and everyday citizens who may be more aware of what isn't working, what is at stake, and what might be improved.
