          Abstract

ABSTRACT Aim: To evaluate the effectiveness of an educational video about cardiopulmonary resuscitation on lay people in the waiting room of a basic health unit. Methods: This was a quasi-experimental study of the before-and-after type conducted from May to November 2019. The sample consisted of 66 people who were in the waiting room waiting for consultation in the Basic Health Unit. To evaluate the knowledge, a theoretical test was used before and after the educational intervention mediated by the educational video "Cardiorespiratory arrest: how to act to save". Descriptive statistics and the McNemar and Wilcoxon tests were used in the analysis. Results: In the pre-test, there was a median of correct answers of 5 (interquartile range = 7), while in the post-test, the median was 8 (interquartile range = 7), p<0.001. There was an increase in knowledge, especially on the questions about CRA recognition (p<0.001), Emergency mobile care service (SAMU) number (p<0.001), victim position (p<0.001), and compression force level (p<0.001). Conclusion: The educational video is effective in improving laypersons' knowledge about cardiopulmonary resuscitation and can be used in the health education of patients in the waiting room.

Extracorporeal Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation for Out‐of‐Hospital Cardiac Arrest in Adult Patients

Abstract Extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR) followed by targeted temperature management has been demonstrated to significantly improve the outcomes of out‐of‐hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) in adult patients. Although recent narrative and systematic reviews on extracorporeal life support in the emergency department are available in the literature, they are focused on the efficacy of ECPR, and no comprehensively summarized review on ECPR for OHCA in adult patients is available. In this review, we aimed to clarify the prevalence, pathophysiology, predictors, management, and details of the complications of ECPR for OHCA, all of which have not been reviewed in previous literature, with the aim of facilitating understanding among acute care physicians. The leading countries in the field of ECPR are those in East Asia followed by those in Europe and the United States. ECPR may reduce the risks of reperfusion injury and deterioration to secondary brain injury. Unlike conventional cardiopulmonary resuscitation, however, no clear prognostic markers have been identified for ECPR for OHCA. Bleeding was identified as the most common complication of ECPR in patients with OHCA. Future studies should combine ECPR with intra‐aortic balloon pump, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation flow, target blood pressure, and seizure management in ECPR.

Creation and validation of an educational video for deaf people about cardiopulmonary resuscitation *

ABSTRACT Objective: to create and validate an educational video for teaching deaf students about cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Method: methodological study consisting in the creation of an educational video, validation of its content by 22 nurses with expertise in cardiorespiratory arrest, and evaluation by 16 deaf students. For data collection, the following validated instruments were used: the Instrument for Validation of Educational Content used for the validation by nurses and the Assistive Technology Assessment Questionnaire for the evaluation by deaf students. The criterion for validation was concordance higher than 80%, analyzed through the content validation index and binomial test. Results: the final version of the video lasted seven minutes and thirty seconds, covered the steps that should be performed by a lay person to help a victim of cardiorespiratory arrest, presented animations and the narration in the Brazilian sign language. All the items obtained agreement among nurses and of among deaf students equal or superior to 80%. Conclusion: the video was considered to present valid content by the judges and comprehensible content by deaf students. Thus the video represents an inclusive technology for health education of deaf people about cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
