Abstract

O Marianismo fundamenta-se no ideal de mulher caracterizado pelo sofrimento, sacrifício e abnegação. A constituição da mulher à imagem da Virgem Maria corrobora o papel tradicional feminino como responsável pela esfera doméstica do cuidado com a casa e com a família. Neste artigo discutimos a forma como o Marianismo pode ser apropriado simultaneamente para reproduzir a tradicional subjugação feminina e para afirmar formas de exercício de poder. O objetivo é entender de que maneira o sacrifício e a abnegação sustentam a posição feminina vitimizada, mas igualmente empoderam as mulheres de forma peculiar. Através das trajetórias de vida de mulheres brasileiras encarceradas, mostraremos como seus discursos carregam a marca do sofrimento e da violência, bem como o poder adquirido através deste mesmo sofrimento.

Le Marianismo est un idéal de femme caractérisé pour la souffrance, le sacrifice et l'abnegation. La constitution de la femme à l'image de la Vierge Marie confirme le rôle traditionnel féminin comme responsable pour s'occuper de la maison e de la famille. Dans cette étude nous examinons la façon que le Marianismo peut être utilisé pour reproduire la traditionnel subjugation féminine et pour affirmer formes d'exercice de pouvoir. L'objective est comprendre comme le sacrifice e l'abnegation soutiennent la position victimisée des femmes, mais au même temps leurs donne pouvoir d'une façon particulière. En utilisant des trajectoires de vie des femmes bréziliennes incarcérées, nous montrerons comme leur discours ont de la souffrance et de la violence souvent vécues, aussi bien que le pouvoir acquis pour cette souffrance.

Translated abstract

Marianismo is founded on the image of the ideal woman characterized by suffering, sacrifice, and abnegation. The constitution of womanhood inspired by the image of the Virgin Mary corroborates the traditional role of women as responsible for the domestic sphere, caring for the home and the family. In this paper we discuss how the Marianismo may be appropriated to simultaneously reproduce female traditional subjugation and to affirm ways of exerting power. The goal is to understand how sacrifice and abnegation sustain female victimized position, but also empower women in peculiar ways. Through the life trajectories of Brazilian incarcerated women, we show how their discourses carry the mark of suffering and violence recurrently experienced, as well as the power acquired through this same suffering.
