          Abstract

          Translated abstract

this papes focuses on a comercial voyage to Brazil, in 1581, by the Minion of London, organized by five London merchants, and the documents about the enterprise edited in Richard's Hakluyt's Principall Navigations. The expedition had the intention of establishing direct trade between Brazil and England, exchanging english textiles and manufactured goods for Brazilian white sugar. This voyage reflects english attempts to bypass the Portuguese and Spanish monopoly in the New World, after Drake´s voyage, and the ambiguity of brazilians colonists towards the foreigner merchants, in a particular moment of change in European geopolitics.
