Abstract: The aim of this article is to give an account of the development of anthropology in the field of death studies in Chile. For this purpose, a general review of the main texts and authors of the anthropological literature was carried out, from its precursors to the present day. The aim is to show that sociocultural anthropology, although it has had an ethnographic and ethnological tradition on death since the nineteenth century, was invisible as a field of study for much of the twentieth century. Only since the 1990s has this trend changed, when archaeology and forensic anthropology generated a renewed interest in understanding death in contemporary societies. This has had the impact of a proliferation of studies that respond to diverse conditions and interests, evidencing a dispersion and academic atomization that has not allowed the construction of a disciplinary field of its own and articulated, allowing the development and consolidation of an anthropology of death as such.
