I am an Associate Professor and Head of Research & Laboratories in the Wits Department of Surgery. I obtained my PhD in Molecular Medicine from St George’s, University of London (UK) in 2007, and I am a NRF-C2 rated scientist. I love research and work at the intersection of biochemistry, molecular medicine and translational research in surgery, particularly in patients with cancer (mainly hepato-pancreato-biliary cancers) or vascular disease. Biostatistics is another big passion of mine; I am the Working Group Chair for Statistics for the NIHR Global Health Research Unit on Global Surgery’s Education and Training Committee. I am an Associate Editor on the accredited Wits Journal of Clinical Medicine and also supervise and examine many postgraduate degrees. I have supervised >27 PG degrees to completion.
In a nutshell, my research passion is to conduct contextually appropriate research in South Africa and Africa, specifically applicable to advancing diagnostic, prognostic and management practices concerning surgically-treatable patients from low-resourced settings.
