Abstract

O presente estudo teve como objetivo investigar as associações das variáveis sexo, área profissional e personalidade com os afetos positivos e negativos, em estudantes universitários da região sudeste do Brasil. Participaram 120 alunos, com média de idade de 24,76 (DP = 5,517) anos, sendo 71,7% do sexo feminino. Eles responderam à Escala de afetos e à Bateria Fatorial de Personalidade (BFP). Análises de correlação mostraram associações diferentes entre os fatores dos instrumentos para o sexo masculino e para os estudantes da área de Engenharia em relação à amostra geral. Modelos de regressão apresentaram o sexo, juntamente com Neuroticismo e Socialização, como variáveis preditoras dos afetos negativos, enquanto os afetos positivos foram mais bem explicados pela área ocupacional, Extroversão, Neuroticismo e Realização. A importância de considerar outros aspectos, além da cultura, ao estudar bem-estar subjetivo e personalidade foi discutida.

Translated abstract

The present study aimed to investigate associations of sex, professional area and personality with the positive and negative affects in university students from southeastern Brazil. Participants were 120 students, with a mean age of 24.76 (SD = 5.517) years and 71.7% were female. They answered Affect Scale and Factorial Personality Battery (FPB). correlation analysis showed different associations between factors of the instruments for males and for students of Engineering in relation to the overall sample. Regression models showed sex together with Neuroticism and Socialization as predictors of negative affects. While positive affects were best explained by occupational area, Extroversion, Neuroticism and Realization. The importance of considering other aspects, in addition to culture, to study subjective well-being and personality was discussed.

El presente estudio tuvo como objetivo investigar las asociaciones de género, área profesional y la personalidad con afectos positivos y negativos de los estudiantes universitarios del sureste de Brasil. los participantes fueron 120 estudiantes, con una edad media de 24,76 (DE = 5,517) años y el 71,7% eran mujeres. Respondieron la Escala de Afectos y la Batería Factorial de Personalidad (BFP). El análisis de correlación mostró diferentes asociaciones entre los factores de los instrumentos para los hombres y para los estudiantes de Ingeniería en relación con la muestra total. los modelos de regresión mostraron el sexo junto con Neuroticismo y la Socialización, como predictores de efectos negativos. Mientras que los efectos positivos se explican mejor por área ocupacional, la Extroversión, Neuroticismo y la Realización. la importancia de tener en cuenta otros aspectos, además de la cultura, para estudiar el bienestar subjetivo y la personalidad se discutió.

Using Multivariate Statistics

After the Introduction Chapter, the second Chapter gives a guide to the multivariate techniques that are covered in this book and palces them in context with the more familiare univeriate and bivariate statistics where possible. Included in this chapter is a flow chart that organizes statistical techniques on the basis of the major research questions asked. Chapter three provides a brief review of univariate and bivariate statistical techniques for those who are interested. Chapter four deals with the assumptions an limitations of mulitvariate statistical methods. Assessment and violation of assumptions are discussed, along with alternatives for dealing with violations when they occur. This chapter is also meant to be referred to often, and the reader ist guided back to it frequently in Chapters five through sixteen an eighteen (online). Chapters five through sixteen and eighteen (online) cover specific multivariate techniques. They include descriptive, conceptual sections as well as a guided tour through a real-world data set for which the analysis is apporopriate. The tour includes an example of a Results section describing the outcome of the statistical analysis apporopriate for submissions to a professional journal. Each technique chapter includes a comparision of cumputer programs. Chapter seventeen is an attempt to integrate univariate, bivariate, and multivariate statistics through the multivariate general linear model. The common elements underlying all the techniques are emphasized, rather than the differences among them. This Chapter is ment to pull together the material in the remainder of the book with a conceptual rather than pragmatic emphasis.
