          Abstract

          Banalieva and Dhanaraj argue that digital service multinationals (DSMNCs) possess a new category of firm-specific advantage (FSA), the network advantage, and that, contrary to extant theory, they use networks as a mode of governance. I review the business models used by DSMNCs, compare them to non-digital ones, and explore what we can learn about them from extant IB theory. I conclude that network advantages are not a new category of FSAs, that networks are not a mode of governance, and that their use by DSMNCs is well explained by extant theory.

          Banalieva et Dhanaraj soutiennent que les entreprises multinationales de services numériques (EMNSN) possèdent une nouvelle catégorie d’avantages spécifiques de l’entreprise (ASE), l’avantage réseau, et que, contrairement à la théorie existante, elles utilisent les réseaux comme mode de gouvernance. Je passe en revue les modèles d’affaires utilisés par les EMNSN, je les compare aux modèles non numériques et j’explore ce que nous pouvons apprendre sur eux des théories existantes en IB. Je conclus que les avantages des réseaux ne peuvent pas être une nouvelle catégorie d’ASE, que les réseaux ne sont pas un mode de gouvernance et que leur utilisation par les EMNSN s’explique bien par la théorie existante.

Reviso los modelos de negocio usados por las multinacionales de servicios digitales, las comparo con las no digitales, y exploro que podemos aprender de la teoría de negocios internacionales existente. Concluyo las ventajas de red no pueden ser una nueva categoría de ventajas específicas de la empresa, que las redes no son una forma de gobernanza, y que las dinámicas usadas por las multinacionales de servicios digitales son explicadas bien por la teoría existente.

Reviso os modelos de negócios usados pelas DSMNCs, comparo-os com os não-digitais e explico o que podemos aprender com a teoria de IB existente. Concluo que vantagens de rede não podem ser uma nova categoria de FSAs, que redes não são um modo de governança e que seu uso pelas DSMNCs é bem explicado pela teoria existente.
