          Abstract

With the many papers published in the field of pediatric neurosurgery, it is often difficult to recognize those that have the most impact on future papers, i.e., citable papers. However, citation analysis allows one to better understand which papers are impacting the field the most. Therefore, the current study aimed to evaluate this literature. The Journal Citation Report database was searched for publications with the words “pediatric neurosurgery” or “pediatric neuro” in the title. Using the Web of Science Core Collection, the top 100 journal articles in pediatric neurosurgery from the selected journals were identified and citation analysis was used to identify the most impactful articles. A search was performed on Web of Science Core Collection by searching for each journal under “Publication Name” and using the Boolean “OR” function to separate fields. The results were ordered by the “Times Cited” category, which provided a list of all the articles from the eight journals appearing in the most cited order. The timeline used was from 1976 to 2021. The top 100 most cited articles were extracted from this list for analysis. The following variables were collected from each scientific article: publication journal, impact factor of journal, title, number of citations, year and month of publication, and type of article. Eight journals were identified on the basis of our search criteria and the articles were sorted by most cited; 1609 pediatric neurosurgery journal articles were screened to select the 100 most cited since 1976. This compilation could serve to help clinicians and researchers to familiarize themselves with the journal articles included in terms of study type, study field, journal of publication, and recurring authors.

New developments in the use of citation analysis in research evaluation.

This paper presents an overview of research assessment methodologies developed in the field of evaluative bibliometrics, a subfield of quantitative science and technology studies, aimed to construct indicators of research performance from a quantitative statistical analysis of scientific-scholarly documents. Citation analysis is one of its key methodologies. The paper illustrates the potentialities and limitations of the use of bibliometric indicators in research assessment. It discusses the relationship between metrics and peer review; databases used as sources of bibliometric analysis; the pros and cons of indicators often applied, including journal impact factors, Hirsch indices, and normalized indicators of citation impact; and approaches to the bibliometric measurement of institutional research performance.

A Bibliometric Analysis of Top-Cited Journal Articles in Obstetrics and Gynecology

Key Points Question What are the top-cited obstetrics and gynecology (OBGYN) articles in the Institute for Scientific Information Web of Science’s Science Citation Index Expanded and how do the articles from nonspecialty journals compare with those published in OBGYN specialty journals? Findings In this cross-sectional bibliometric analysis, search terms from the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology’s 2018 certifying examination topics list were used to identify top-cited articles from 1980 to 2018. Compared with top-cited articles published in OBGYN journals, those published in nonspecialty journals covered topics with broad interest to women’s health care professionals, were more frequently cited, and were more likely to be randomized trials. Meaning There are substantial differences between top-cited OBGYN articles published in nonspecialty vs OBGYN journals, which likely reflect the different goals of the journals.

100 most cited articles in orthopaedic surgery.

Citation analysis reflects the recognition a work has received in the scientific community by its peers, and is a common method to determine 'classic' works in medical specialties. We determined which published articles in orthopaedic journals have been most cited by other authors by ranking the 100 top-cited works. By analyzing characteristics of these articles, we intended to determine what qualities make an orthopaedic article important to the specialty. Finally, we determined if there was a change in level of evidence of studies on this list with time. Science Citation Index Expanded was searched for citations to articles published in any of the 49 journals in the subject category "ORTHOPEDICS." Each of the 49 journals was searched separately using the "cited reference search" to determine the 100 most often cited articles. Each article was reviewed for basic information including year of publication, country of origin, source journal of the article, article type, and level of evidence. We categorized the journal article by field of research where possible. The number of citations ranged from 1748 to 353. The 100 most often cited articles in orthopaedic surgery were published in 11 of the 49 journals, spanning from general to more specific subspecialty journals. The majority of the papers (76) were clinical, with the remaining representing some type of basic science research. The most common level of evidence was IV (42 of the 76 studies). Of the 76 clinical articles, 27 introduced or tested classification systems or outcome measurement tools. Authors aiming to write a highly cited article in an orthopaedic surgery journal will be favored by language of publication, source journal, country of origin, and introduction of a classification scheme or outcome tool.
