          Abstract

          En la actualidad se buscan configuraciones estructurales, nuevas o ya existentes, livianas y resistentes que puedan absorber grandes cantidades de energía por deformación plástica. En este sentido las mallas de metal expandido se presentan como una alternativa. En este trabajo se estudia el comportamiento estructural de mallas de metal expandido sometidas a tracción. Las mallas de metal expandido se forman mediante un proceso de corte y estirado produciendo celdas en formas de diamante. Estas celdas se definen mediante los dos ejes del rombo. Este estudio se realiza en dos etapas: experimental, en la que se generan y ensayan probetas orientadas en diferentes direcciones con respecto al eje mayor; y numérica, donde se generan modelos computacionales que reproducen los ensayos experimentales. Los resultados numéricos se contrastan con los resultados experimentales. Se presentan curvas carga-desplazamiento para cada configuración, probando la notable influencia de la orientación del eje mayor de las celdas en la respuesta estructural de las mismas.

          Translated abstract

          Currently, there is a need for new structural configurations that are able to absorb large amounts of energy by plastic deformation. In this regard, expanded metal sheets are an alternative. In this paper, the structural behavior of expanded metal sheets subjected to tensile loading is investigated in depth. Expanded metal sheets are fabricated by a cutting and slitting process producing a diamond like cell. These cells are defined by two axes. This paper is conducted in two phases: the first one, generating and testing experimental models in different directions with respect to the major axis; and the second one, generating computational numerical models which reproduce the experimental tests. The numerical results were contrasted with the experimental results. Load-displacement curves for each configuration are presented, showing the significant influence of the major axis orientation in the structural response of the model.
