          ABSTRACT

          Objective:

          To investigate the adequacy of the theoretical model of the Movement Assessment Battery for Children-Second Edition (MABC-2) instrument.

          Methods:

          582 children, of both sexes, aged between 3 and 5 years and residents in the city of Maringá (state of Paraná, Southern Brazil) participated in the study. Data were collected from May/2014 to June/2015 and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics.

          Results:

          The evidence obtained from exploratory factor analysis indicated the presence of two factors, which was the option that best fitted the explanatory model. Hence, it was necessary to regroup the motor tasks of the dimensions “Aiming & catching” and “Balance” into only one dimension. It is noteworthy that the “Bicycle trail” motor task did not fit the model, as it presented a low and negative factor load in the analyzed dimensions. In the confirmatory factor analysis, adequate adjustment indices were observed for the tested model, which confirmed the non-classification of the “Bicycle trail” motor task in the original dimension.

          Conclusions:

          After removing the “Bicycle trail” motor task, the adjusted two-factor model seems to be the most appropriate to assess the motor performance of children participating in the study.

          RESUMO

          Objetivo:

          Investigar a adequabilidade do modelo teórico do instrumento de avaliação motora Movement Assessment Battery for Children-Second Edition.

          Métodos:

          Participaram do estudo 582 crianças, de ambos os sexos com idade entre 3 e 5 anos da cidade de Maringá, Paraná, no período de maio/2014 a junho/2015. Para analisar os dados, utilizou-se a estatística descritiva e inferencial.

          Resultados:

          As evidências obtidas por meio da análise fatorial exploratória indicaram a presença de dois fatores. Essa opção foi a que melhor se ajustou ao modelo explicativo. Com isso, foi necessário reagrupar as tarefas motoras das dimensões “lançar e receber” e “equilíbrio” em apenas uma dimensão. Destaca-se que a tarefa motora “caminho da bicicleta” não se adequou ao modelo, pois apresentou carga fatorial baixa e negativa nas dimensões analisadas. Na análise fatorial confirmatória, observaram-se índices de ajustamento adequados para o modelo testado, a qual confirmou o não enquadramento da tarefa motora “caminho da bicicleta” na dimensão original.

          Conclusões:

          Após a retirada da tarefa motora “caminho da bicicleta”, o modelo ajustado de dois fatores parece ser o mais adequado para avaliar o desempenho motor das crianças participantes do estudo.

            The Movement Assessment Battery for Children--Second Edition (MABC-2): a review and critique.

            The Movement Assessment Battery for Children--Second Edition (MABC-2) is a recent revision of the well-known Movement Assessment Battery for Children (MABC). The MABC-2 is designed to identify and describe impairments in motor performance of children and adolescents 3 through 16 years of age. The Performance Test and the Checklist have been standardized using a larger, more representative normative sample. The evolution of the MABC-2 and research using the MABC is presented to provide a context for the MABC-2. The content of the MABC-2 is described including the scoring format, standardization sample, reliability, and validity. The MABC-2 includes four new items, the revision of some items, the creation of a 3- through 6-year and 11- through 16-year age bands, the combination of the 7- through 8- and 9- through 10-year age bands, and a system to assist with score interpretation. The Checklist has been reorganized and the total number of items reduced to 30. The primary weakness of the MABC-2 is the lack of evidence on reliability and validity. The quality, comprehensiveness, and rigor of reliability and validity studies reported in the test manual are variable. Considering the strengths and weakness of the MABC-2, it appears to be a clinically useful instrument, however, until further reliability and validity studies are completed, therapists should be guarded when basing their clinical decisions solely on MABC-2 test results.

              Age band 1 of the Movement Assessment Battery for Children-Second Edition: exploring its usefulness in mainland China.

              The aim of this paper was to examine the validity and reliability of age band 1 of the Movement Assessment Battery for Children-Second Edition (MABC-2) in preparation for its standardization in mainland China. Interrater and test-retest reliability of the MABC-2 was estimated using Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC). Cronbach's alpha for each item and Item-total correlation were used to determine internal consistency. The content validity was determined by the Item-level content validity index (I-CVI). Confirmatory factor analysis was used to examine the factorial validity of the MABC-2 test. The correlation coefficients between the MABC-2 and the Peabody Developmental Motor Scales-2 (PDMS-2) were used to assess the criteria-related validity. The Cronbach's alpha values of all eight items together were moderate but acceptable. The correlation coefficients between each test item and the total score were moderate except for two items. The ICC of interrater and test-retest reliability for each test items was good. The I-CVI of each item was excellent (each above 0.78). The result of confirmatory factor analysis showed that the goodness-of-fit indices of the adjusted model were good (each above 0.9), indicating a satisfactory fit of the data to the model. The total score on MABC-2 and PDMS-2 was correlated well (r=0.631). It is concluded that the reliability and validity of age band 1 of MABC-2 were fair in this study based on a large sample. However, there was a need to adjust part of items to improve the test's psychometric properties when it is used in Chinese children.
