      Recent trends of potential medicinal uses of rice bran with its composition and bibliographic analysis

          Abstract

          Rice is an essential crop, growing in nearly every part worldwide. Grains are the most common rice plant part consumed as food; however, other plant parts also have some significant values apart from grains. Rice bran is the outer layer of the rice grain, an excellent source of various phenolic, flavonoid, and phytoactive compounds. This review article discusses the various compounds found in rice bran with their structure and properties. Different medicinal properties of rice bran are also discussed in this review article. Several constituents of rice bran show anticancerous activity through various mechanisms like cell cycle arrest and regulation of apoptotic factors. Anti‐inflammatory, antidiabetic, antihypertensive, and cholesterol‐lowering are the other activities of rice bran, briefly explained in the article, along with their mechanism of action. A bibliographic network, including keyword bibliography analysis and a three‐field plot, has also been discussed to show the trends and network of common keywords in the recently published documents in the Scopus database. Overall, this review explores the rice bran compositions with their structures, activity, and various medicinal uses of rice bran, which can be proven an efficient oil source for nutritional purposes.

          Inflammation and cancer.

          Recent data have expanded the concept that inflammation is a critical component of tumour progression. Many cancers arise from sites of infection, chronic irritation and inflammation. It is now becoming clear that the tumour microenvironment, which is largely orchestrated by inflammatory cells, is an indispensable participant in the neoplastic process, fostering proliferation, survival and migration. In addition, tumour cells have co-opted some of the signalling molecules of the innate immune system, such as selectins, chemokines and their receptors for invasion, migration and metastasis. These insights are fostering new anti-inflammatory therapeutic approaches to cancer development.

            Immunity, inflammation, and cancer.

            Inflammatory responses play decisive roles at different stages of tumor development, including initiation, promotion, malignant conversion, invasion, and metastasis. Inflammation also affects immune surveillance and responses to therapy. Immune cells that infiltrate tumors engage in an extensive and dynamic crosstalk with cancer cells, and some of the molecular events that mediate this dialog have been revealed. This review outlines the principal mechanisms that govern the effects of inflammation and immunity on tumor development and discusses attractive new targets for cancer therapy and prevention. 2010 Elsevier Inc.               Flavonoids: an overview

              Flavonoids, a group of natural substances with variable phenolic structures, are found in fruits, vegetables, grains, bark, roots, stems, flowers, tea and wine. These natural products are well known for their beneficial effects on health and efforts are being made to isolate the ingredients so called flavonoids. Flavonoids are now considered as an indispensable component in a variety of nutraceutical, pharmaceutical, medicinal and cosmetic applications. This is attributed to their anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory, anti-mutagenic and anti-carcinogenic properties coupled with their capacity to modulate key cellular enzyme function. Research on flavonoids received an added impulse with the discovery of the low cardiovascular mortality rate and also prevention of CHD. Information on the working mechanisms of flavonoids is still not understood properly. However, it has widely been known for centuries that derivatives of plant origin possess a broad spectrum of biological activity. Current trends of research and development activities on flavonoids relate to isolation, identification, characterisation and functions of flavonoids and finally their applications on health benefits. Molecular docking and knowledge of bioinformatics are also being used to predict potential applications and manufacturing by industry. In the present review, attempts have been made to discuss the current trends of research and development on flavonoids, working mechanisms of flavonoids, flavonoid functions and applications, prediction of flavonoids as potential drugs in preventing chronic diseases and future research directions.
