      Monitoring Physiological Performance over 4 Weeks Moderate Altitude Training in Elite Chinese Cross-Country Skiers: An Observational Study

          Abstract

          The current observational study aimed to monitor the physiological performance over 4 weeks of living and training at a moderate altitude in elite Chinese cross-country skiers (8 males, mean age 20.83 ± 1.08 years). Lactate threshold, maximal oxygen uptake, blood, and body composition tests were performed at different time points to investigate the changes in physiological performance. The data were analysed by a one-way repeated measures ANOVA and a paired sample T-test between the test results. During the training camp, systematic load monitoring was carried out. Lactate threshold velocity, lactate threshold heart rate, and upper body muscle mass increased significantly (p < 0.01) after moderate altitude training. Maximum oxygen uptake was reduced compared to pre-tests (p < 0.05). Aerobic capacity parameters (maximal oxygen uptake, haemoglobin, red blood cell count) did not significantly increase after athletes returned to sea level (p > 0.05). These findings suggest that 4 weeks of moderate altitude training can significantly improve athletes’ lactate threshold and upper body muscle mass; no significant improvement in other aerobic capacity was seen. Exposure time, training load, and nutritional strategies should be thoroughly planned for optimal training of skiers at moderate altitudes.

          Monitoring Training Load to Understand Fatigue in Athletes

          Many athletes, coaches, and support staff are taking an increasingly scientific approach to both designing and monitoring training programs. Appropriate load monitoring can aid in determining whether an athlete is adapting to a training program and in minimizing the risk of developing non-functional overreaching, illness, and/or injury. In order to gain an understanding of the training load and its effect on the athlete, a number of potential markers are available for use. However, very few of these markers have strong scientific evidence supporting their use, and there is yet to be a single, definitive marker described in the literature. Research has investigated a number of external load quantifying and monitoring tools, such as power output measuring devices, time-motion analysis, as well as internal load unit measures, including perception of effort, heart rate, blood lactate, and training impulse. Dissociation between external and internal load units may reveal the state of fatigue of an athlete. Other monitoring tools used by high-performance programs include heart rate recovery, neuromuscular function, biochemical/hormonal/immunological assessments, questionnaires and diaries, psychomotor speed, and sleep quality and quantity. The monitoring approach taken with athletes may depend on whether the athlete is engaging in individual or team sport activity; however, the importance of individualization of load monitoring cannot be over emphasized. Detecting meaningful changes with scientific and statistical approaches can provide confidence and certainty when implementing change. Appropriate monitoring of training load can provide important information to athletes and coaches; however, monitoring systems should be intuitive, provide efficient data analysis and interpretation, and enable efficient reporting of simple, yet scientifically valid, feedback.

            Defining Training and Performance Caliber: A Participant Classification Framework

            Throughout the sport-science and sports-medicine literature, the term “elite” subjects might be one of the most overused and ill-defined terms. Currently, there is no common perspective or terminology to characterize the caliber and training status of an individual or cohort. This paper presents a 6-tiered Participant Classification Framework whereby all individuals across a spectrum of exercise backgrounds and athletic abilities can be classified. The Participant Classification Framework uses training volume and performance metrics to classify a participant to one of the following: Tier 0: Sedentary; Tier 1: Recreationally Active; Tier 2: Trained/Developmental; Tier 3: Highly Trained/National Level; Tier 4: Elite/International Level; or Tier 5: World Class. We suggest the Participant Classification Framework can be used to classify participants both prospectively (as part of study participant recruitment) and retrospectively (during systematic reviews and/or meta-analyses). Discussion around how the Participant Classification Framework can be tailored toward different sports, athletes, and/or events has occurred, and sport-specific examples provided. Additional nuances such as depth of sport participation, nationality differences, and gender parity within a sport are all discussed. Finally, chronological age with reference to the junior and masters athlete, as well as the Paralympic athlete, and their inclusion within the Participant Classification Framework has also been considered. It is our intention that this framework be widely implemented to systematically classify participants in research featuring exercise, sport, performance, health, and/or fitness outcomes going forward, providing the much-needed uniformity to classification practices.

              Molecular adaptations in human skeletal muscle to endurance training under simulated hypoxic conditions.

              This study was performed to explore changes in gene expression as a consequence of exercise training at two levels of intensity under normoxic and normobaric hypoxic conditions (corresponding to an altitude of 3,850 m). Four groups of human subjects trained five times a week for a total of 6 wk on a bicycle ergometer. Muscle biopsies were taken, and performance tests were carried out before and after the training period. Similar increases in maximal O(2) uptake (8.3-13.1%) and maximal power output (11.4-20.8%) were found in all groups. RT-PCR revealed elevated mRNA concentrations of the alpha-subunit of hypoxia-inducible factor 1 (HIF-1) after both high- (+82.4%) and low (+78.4%)-intensity training under hypoxic conditions. The mRNA of HIF-1alpha(736), a splice variant of HIF-1alpha newly detected in human skeletal muscle, was shown to be changed in a similar pattern as HIF-1alpha. Increased mRNA contents of myoglobin (+72.2%) and vascular endothelial growth factor (+52.4%) were evoked only after high-intensity training in hypoxia. Augmented mRNA levels of oxidative enzymes, phosphofructokinase, and heat shock protein 70 were found after high-intensity training under both hypoxic and normoxic conditions. Our findings suggest that HIF-1 is specifically involved in the regulation of muscle adaptations after hypoxia training. Fine-tuning of the training response is recognized at the molecular level, and with less sensitivity also at the structural level, but not at global functional responses like maximal O(2) uptake or maximal power output.
