          Abstract

          Resumen Entre 1948 y 1960, Aimé Césaire y Suzanne Césaire se inspiraron en la victoriosa insurrección antiesclavista del 22 de mayo de 1848 en Martinica. Ambos basaron sus producciones en la lectura de una novela de Lafcadio Hearn en la que Youma, una nodriza esclava, elige morir con sus amos durante la rebelión. En su texto sobre Victor Schœlcher (1948), y también en sus poemas «Mot» (1950) y «Statue de Lafcadio Hearn» (1955-1960), Aimé Césaire sitúa al lector en el corazón de una insurrección negra oficiada por el hechicero (quimboiseur) que Hearn había pasado por alto. El manuscrito de Aurore de la liberté (1952), de Suzanne Césaire, se perdió. Sin embargo, el análisis de dos reseñas de la obra, poco reconocidas e invaluables, muestra que las representaciones constituyen una revolución estética. Esas reseñas de valor incalculable revelan además que la dramaturga cambió el final de la novela de Hearn: rebautizada como Marie, Youma se une a la rebelión de 1848. Al contrario de Aimé Césaire, Suzanne Césaire le dio importancia al personaje de la nana, y con ello sacó del olvido a los esclavos domésticos asesinados el 22 de mayo de 1848.

          Resumo Entre 1948 e 1960, Aimé Césaire e Suzanne Césaire inspiraram-se na vitoriosa insurreição antiescravista de 22 de maio de 1848 em Martinica. Ambos os dois basearam suas produções na leitura de um romance de Lafcadio Hearn em que Youma, uma ama de leite, decide morrer com seus amos durante a rebelião. Em seu texto sobre Victor Schœlcher (1948), e também em seus poemas “Mot” (1950) e “Statue de Lafcadio Hearn” (1955-1960), Aimé Césaire localiza o leitor no coração de uma insurreição negra oficiada pelo feiticeiro (quimboiseur) que Hearn tinha ignorado. O manuscrito de Aurore de la liberte (1952), de Suzanne Césaire, perdeu-se. No entanto, a análise de duas resenhas da obra, pouco reconhecidas e inestimáveis, mostra que as representações constituem uma revolução estética. Essas resenhas de valor incalculável revelam também que a dramaturgia trocou o final do romance de Hearn: rebatizada como Marie, Youma une-se à rebelião de 1848. Ao contrário de Aimé Césaire, Suzanne Césaire deu importância à personagem da ama de leite, e assim tirou do esquecimento aos escravos domésticos assassinados em 22 de maio de 1848.

          Translated abstract

          Abstract Between 1948 and 1960, Aimé Césaire and Suzanne Césaire drew on the successful antislavery insurrection of May 22, 1848 in Martinique for artistic inspiration. Both based their writings on a novel by Lafcadio Hearn in which a female enslaved domestic, Youma, chose to die alongside her masters during the revolt. In his work on Victor Schœlcher (1948), much like in his poems “Mots” (1950) and “Statue de Lafcadio Hearn” (1955-1960), Aimé Césaire places the reader at the heart of an “insurrection nègre,” and offers a positive depiction of the Quimboiseur sorcerer, which Hearn had originally presented as a character worthy of being despised. Suzanne Césaire’s reinterpretation of Hearn’s novel entitled Aurore de la liberté (1952) has not survived. An analysis of two underappreciated and invaluable reviews suggests that these performances were revolutionary in aesthetic terms and reveal how the playwright changed the ending of Hearn’s novel. Instead of staying to die alongside her masters (Hearn’s interpretation), Youma changes her name to Marie and chooses to join the revolt of 1848. In contrast to Aimé Césaire’s reinterpretation, Suzanne Césaire develops the character Youma more fully and in so doing gives voice to the neglected enslaved female domestics who were killed on the 22 May 1848.
