          Abstract

          Resumo Com o objetivo de nortear o leitor no contexto da elaboração da teoria do par compartilhado de Gilbert Newton Lewis (1875-1946), nos debruçamos sobre os documentos originais publicados por ele e as produções disponíveis dos autores que se tornaram relevantes ao desenvolvimento do seu modelo estrutural, chamado de átomo cúbico. A partir da metodologia de pesquisa estudo de caso abordamos tanto a vivencia escolar ou preparação acadêmica de Lewis, para tanto, traçamos os caminhos percorridos por seus predecessores e contemporâneos. Objetivando subsidiar os trabalhos de História da Ciência e Ensino buscamos abordar o pesquisador em seu contexto, bem como a construção do conhecimento da teoria da ligação de G. Lewis. Desde a sua chegada em Berkeley, em 1912, que Lewis se dedicou fortemente a pesquisa. Entre vários outros trabalhos de grande relevância para a química, ele postulou que o átomo neutro tenderia a manter um número par de elétrons em uma Concha ao redor do núcleo, esse número poderia variar se dispondo simetricamente nos oito cantos de um Cubo.

          Translated abstract

          Abstract In order to guide the reader in the context of the elaboration of Gilbert Newton Lewis’s shared pair theory (1875-1946), we focus on the original documents published by him and the available productions of the authors that have become relevant to the development of the his structural model, called the cubic atom. From the case study research methodology, we approach Lewis’s school experience, or academic preparation, we trace the paths traveled by his predecessors and contemporaries. Aiming to subsidize the works of History of Science and Teaching, we seek to approach the researcher in its context, as well as the construction of knowledge of G. Lewis’s theory of bond. Since his arrival in Berkeley in 1912, Lewis has devoted himself strongly to research. Among several other works of great relevance to chemistry, he postulated that the neutral atom would tend to keep an even number of electrons in a Shell around the nucleus; such a number could vary if arranged symmetrically in the eight corners of a cube.
