      Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the breast, 3 cases report and literature review

          Rationale:

          Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) is one of the most common malignant tumors in salivary glands, with specific histomorphological and molecular characteristics. MEC occurring in breast is more rare.

          Patient concerns:

          We reported 3 cases of female breast mass, diagnosed as benign nodules by ultrasound.

          Diagnoses:

          The first 2 cases were pathological diagnosed as breast MEC, low grade, and the third case as breast MEC, medium grade.

          Interventions:

          After pathological diagnosis, 3 patients have expanded the scope of breast resection and lymph node dissection, with negative margin and no lymph node metastasis.

          Outcomes:

          In the follow-up observation, the first case was followed up for 24 months, the second case was followed up for 30 months, and the third case was followed up for 12 months. All patients had a good prognosis without evidence of recurrence and metastasis.

          Conclusion:

          Breast MEC is extremely rare and estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor, and human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 negative breast cancer with a good prognosis, which is different from other highly malignant triple-negative breast cancers. reviewed its clinicopathologic morphological characteristics, immunohistochemical markers and molecular characteristics, prognosis and clinical treatment through literature, in order to understanding its clinicopathology and providing reference for clinical precise treatment.

          Cancer burden of major cancers in China: A need for sustainable actions

          Abstract Cancer is still a major health problem in China although numerous efforts have been made for its prevention and control. Findings from this study showed that lung cancer remains the most common type of cancer diagnosed, and was attributed to nearly 30% of all cancer‐related deaths. The incidence of the five most common cancers, in China, in 2015, including cancers of the lungs, stomach, colorectum, liver and breast, accounted for almost 60% of all cancers diagnosed. The high cancer burden in China highlights the need for further improvement in health education, professional training and the building up an anti‐cancer network for introducing and implementing sustainable actions for cancer control.

            Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma: A Comparison of Histologic Grading Systems and Relationship to MAML2 Rearrangement and Prognosis

            Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) is the most common salivary gland malignancy, but categorization is complicated by variability in grading systems and uncertain prognostic significance of MAML2 rearrangement. The aims of this study were to determine the prognostic significance of MEC grading systems and MAML2 rearrangement status. Fifty-three carcinomas originally diagnosed as MEC (45 primary; 8 recurrent) of major and minor salivary glands were graded according to modified Healey, Brandwein, AFIP, and Katabi systems. Fluorescence in-situ hybridization for MAML2 rearrangement was performed. Clinical features and outcomes were recorded. Twenty-five (47%) carcinomas scored the same in all grading systems. The most common histologic feature leading to a diagnosis of intermediate grade was isolated solid growth. Brandwein assigned the highest percentage of high grade (29%) and AFIP the highest percentage of low grade (80%). MAML2 was rearranged in 37/46 (80%) cases. Forty-three (81%) were morphologically compatible with MEC, and these were more likely to be low-intermediate grade and MAML2 -rearranged. Of primary carcinomas, 6 (13%) recurred. Statistically significant univariate risk factors for recurrence included non-MEC morphology, stage T4, and high Brandwein grade. Margin status, MAML2 rearrangement, and isolated solid growth were not predictive of recurrence. A binary grading system (Brandwein high versus low-plus-intermediate) could be considered to better reflect biologic behavior in MEC. Our study confirms that MAML2 wildtype tumors more likely represent high grade non-MECs, and prior studies demonstrating worse prognosis in MAML2 -non-rearranged MECs may be diluted by high grade non-MECs.

              Triple-Negative Breast Cancer Histological Subtypes with a Favourable Prognosis.

              Triple-negative breast cancers (TNBC), as a group of tumours, have a worse prognosis than stage-matched non-TNBC and lack the benefits of routinely available targeted therapy. However, TNBC is a heterogeneous group of neoplasms, which includes some special type carcinomas with a relatively indolent course. This review on behalf of the European Working Group for Breast Screening Pathology reviews the literature on the special histological types of BC that are reported to have a triple negative phenotype and indolent behaviour. These include adenoid cystic carcinoma of classical type, low-grade adenosquamous carcinoma, fibromatosis-like metaplastic carcinoma, low-grade mucoepidermoid carcinoma, secretory carcinoma, acinic cell carcinoma, and tall cell carcinoma with reversed polarity. The pathological and known molecular features as well as clinical data including treatment and prognosis of these special TNBC subtypes are summarised and it is concluded that many patients with these rare TNBC pure subtypes are unlikely to benefit from systemic chemotherapy. A consensus statement of the working group relating to the multidisciplinary approach and treatment of these rare tumour types concludes the review.
