          Abstract

          RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi identificar o histórico de violência na infância e na adolescência de homens homossexuais brasileiros. Trata-se de um estudo de caráter misto e sequencial. Um total de 101 homens homossexuais com média de idade de 26,37 anos (DP = 6,84) participaram da primeira etapa do estudo, de abordagem quantitativa. A segunda etapa, de abordagem qualitativa, foi composta por sete homens homossexuais com média de idade de 25,43 anos (DP = 4,42). Os instrumentos utilizados foram: Questionário Sociodemográfico; Maltreatment and Abuse Chronology of Exposure Scale (MACE); Entrevista semiestruturada. As formas mais frequentes de violência identificadas entre os participantes na primeira etapa do estudo foram abuso emocional por pares, abuso emocional não-verbal e maus-tratos físicos parentais. Por meio da análise das entrevistas, foram identificados os seguintes temas: 1) Contextos de violência; 2) Não conformidade de gênero; 3) Emoções atribuídas às experiências de violência. É fundamental que pais e educadores compreendam o papel de suporte emocional que devem desempenhar no processo de desenvolvimento de crianças e adolescentes. Neste sentido, psicólogos e demais profissionais da saúde devem realizar intervenções que contribuam para a desconstrução de estereótipos de gênero e lógicas heteronormativas que sustentam o preconceito e a violência.

          RESUMEN El objetivo de este estudio fue identificar la historia de violencia en la niñez y adolescencia de hombres brasileños homosexuales. Es un estudio mixto y secuencial. Un total de 101 hombres homosexuales con una edad promedio de 26,36 años (DE = 6,84) participaron en la primera etapa del estudio, con un enfoque quantitativo. La segunda etapa, con abordaje qualitativo, estuvo composta por siete hombres homosexuales con una edad promedio de 25,43 años (DE = 4,42). Los instrumentos utilizados fueron: Cuestionario Sociodemográfico; Escala de Cronología de Exposición al Maltrato y Abuso (MACE); Estrevista semi-estructurada. Las formas de violencia más frecuentes identificadas entre los participantes en la primera etapa del estudio fueron el abuso emocional por los pares, el abuso emocional no verbal y el abuso físico de los padres. A través del análisis de las entrevistas, se identificaron tres temas principales: 1) Contextos de violencia; 2) No conformidad de género; 3) Emociones atribuidas a las experiencias de violencia. Es fundamental que padres y educadores comprendan el papel del apoyo emocional que deben jugar en el proceso de desarrollo de los niños y adolescentes. En este sentido, los psicólogos y otros profesionales de la salud deben realizar intervenciones que contribuyan a la deconstrucción de los estereotipos de género y las lógicas heteronormativas que sustentan el prejuicio y la violencia.

          Translated abstract

          ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to identify the history of violence in childhood and adolescence of homosexual Brazilian men. It is a mixed and sequential study. A total of 101 homosexual men with an average age of 26.37 years (SD = 6.84) participated in the first stage of the study, with a quantitative approach. The second stage, with a qualitative approach, was composed of seven men with an average age of 25.4 years (SD = 4.42). The instruments used were: Sociodemographic Questionnaire; Maltreatment and Abuse Chronology of Exposure Scale (MACE); Semi-structured interview. The most frequent forms of violence identified among participants in the first stage of the study were emotional abuse by peers, non-verbal emotional abuse, and parental physical abuse. Through the analysis of the interviews, three main themes were identified: 1) Contexts of violence; 2) Gender non-conformity; 3) Emotions attributed to the experiences of violence. It is essential that parents and educators understand the role of emotional support they must play in the development process of children and adolescents. In this sense, psychologists and other health professionals must carry out interventions to contribute to the deconstruction of gender stereotypes and heteronormative logics that support prejudice and violence.

          Prejudice, social stress, and mental health in lesbian, gay, and bisexual populations: conceptual issues and research evidence.

          In this article the author reviews research evidence on the prevalence of mental disorders in lesbians, gay men, and bisexuals (LGBs) and shows, using meta-analyses, that LGBs have a higher prevalence of mental disorders than heterosexuals. The author offers a conceptual framework for understanding this excess in prevalence of disorder in terms of minority stress--explaining that stigma, prejudice, and discrimination create a hostile and stressful social environment that causes mental health problems. The model describes stress processes, including the experience of prejudice events, expectations of rejection, hiding and concealing, internalized homophobia, and ameliorative coping processes. This conceptual framework is the basis for the review of research evidence, suggestions for future research directions, and exploration of public policy implications.

            How to Construct a Mixed Methods Research Design

            This article provides researchers with knowledge of how to design a high quality mixed methods research study. To design a mixed study, researchers must understand and carefully consider each of the dimensions of mixed methods design, and always keep an eye on the issue of validity. We explain the seven major design dimensions: purpose, theoretical drive, timing (simultaneity and dependency), point of integration, typological versus interactive design approaches, planned versus emergent design, and design complexity. There also are multiple secondary dimensions that need to be considered during the design process. We explain ten secondary dimensions of design to be considered for each research study. We also provide two case studies showing how the mixed designs were constructed.

              A meta-analysis of disparities in childhood sexual abuse, parental physical abuse, and peer victimization among sexual minority and sexual nonminority individuals.

              We compared the likelihood of childhood sexual abuse (under age 18), parental physical abuse, and peer victimization based on sexual orientation. We conducted a meta-analysis of adolescent school-based studies that compared the likelihood of childhood abuse among sexual minorities vs sexual nonminorities. Sexual minority individuals were on average 3.8, 1.2, 1.7, and 2.4 times more likely to experience sexual abuse, parental physical abuse, or assault at school or to miss school through fear, respectively. Moderation analysis showed that disparities between sexual minority and sexual nonminority individuals were larger for (1) males than females for sexual abuse, (2) females than males for assault at school, and (3) bisexual than gay and lesbian for both parental physical abuse and missing school through fear. Disparities did not change between the 1990s and the 2000s. The higher rates of abuse experienced by sexual minority youths may be one of the driving mechanisms underlying higher rates of mental health problems, substance use, risky sexual behavior, and HIV reported by sexual minority adults.
