          Abstract

ABSTRACTThe aim of the study was to analyze the prevalence of high blood pressure and factors associated with high blood pressure in basic education teachers. Was conducted a cross-sectional study in 200 teachers of Viçosa-MG, mean age 43.2+10.2 years. Were evaluated anthropometric, biochemical, blood pressure and number of daily steps. Were calculated the linear regression analysis multiple to assess the association between variables. Were found 20% of hypertensive, with these getting higher age, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, waist-hip ratio, percent fat, glucose and triglycerides; and lower high density lipoprotein and number of steps when compared to normotensive (p<0.05). There was an association between high blood pressure and age (r=0.34; p< 0.000), BMI (r=0.27; p< 0.000), dyslipidemia (r=0.19; p=0.003) and diabetes mellitus (r=0.18; p=0.006). In conclusion, the prevalence of high blood pressure was similar to the observed in other studies, and the age, body mass index, dyslipidemia and diabetes mellitus are factors associated with high blood pressure in basic education teachers.

Lipoprotein ratios: Physiological significance and clinical usefulness in cardiovascular prevention

Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol concentration has been the prime index of cardiovascular disease risk and the main target for therapy. However, several lipoprotein ratios or “atherogenic indices” have been defined in an attempt to optimize the predictive capacity of the lipid profile. In this review, we summarize their pathophysiological aspects, and highlight the rationale for using these lipoprotein ratios as cardiovascular risk factors in clinical practice, specifying their cut-off risk levels and a target for lipid-lowering therapy. Total/high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and LDL/HDL cholesterol ratios are risk indicators with greater predictive value than isolated parameters used independently, particularly LDL. Future recommendations regarding the diagnosis and treatment of dyslipidemia, including instruments for calculating cardiovascular risk or action guidelines, should include the lipoprotein ratios with greater predictive power which, in view of the evidence-based results, are none other than those which include HDL cholesterol.

Diabetes and Hypertension: Is There a Common Metabolic Pathway?

Diabetes and hypertension frequently occur together. There is substantial overlap between diabetes and hypertension in etiology and disease mechanisms. Obesity, inflammation, oxidative stress, and insulin resistance are thought to be the common pathways. Recent advances in the understanding of these pathways have provided new insights and perspectives. Physical activity plays an important protective role in the two diseases. Knowing the common causes and disease mechanisms allows a more effective and proactive approach in their prevention and treatment.

Generalized equations for predicting body density of men.

              1. Skinfold thickness, body circumferences and body density were measured in samples of 308 and ninety-five adult men ranging in age from 18 to 61 years. 2. Using the sample of 308 men, multiple regression equations were calculated to estimate body density using either the quadratic or log form of the sum of skinfolds, in combination with age, waist and forearm circumference. 3. The multiple correlations for the equations exceeded 0.90 with standard errors of approximately +/- 0.0073 g/ml. 4. The regression equations were cross validated on the second sample of ninety-five men. The correlations between predicted and laboratory-determined body density exceeded 0.90 with standard errors of approximately 0.0077 g/ml. 5. The regression equations were shown to be valid for adult men varying in age and fatness.
