          Abstract

Touch has been an integral part of physiotherapeutic approaches since the inception of the profession. More recently, advances in the evidence-base for exercise prescription and “active” management have brought “touch” into question. This, in part, assumes that the patient or recipient simply passively receives the input rather than being an active partner in the interaction. In this article, we propose that touch can be used as a two-way conversation between therapist and client where each is engaged in tactile communication that has the potential to raise patient awareness and improve movement-based behaviour.

A new view of language acquisition.

          P K Kuhl (2000)
At the forefront of debates on language are new data demonstrating infants' early acquisition of information about their native language. The data show that infants perceptually "map" critical aspects of ambient language in the first year of life before they can speak. Statistical properties of speech are picked up through exposure to ambient language. Moreover, linguistic experience alters infants' perception of speech, warping perception in the service of language. Infants' strategies are unexpected and unpredicted by historical views. A new theoretical position has emerged, and six postulates of this position are described.

Manual therapy: Exploiting the role of human touch

The physiotherapy approach to musculoskeletal pain is currently pointing more towards a hands-off management of patients by education and exercise therapy. However, hands-on techniques still represent a core element of musculoskeletal physiotherapy practice appreciated by patients and widely taught in educational program and clinical professional development training.
