          Abstract

          RESUMEN El conocimiento levantado sobre Lorenzo Arenas Olivos desde la cultura escrita se ha nutrido de una interpretación apologética, construida desde la experiencia arquetípica del ciudadano liberal que se vinculó a diferentes esferas culturales: mutualismo, masonería y radicalismo. Lo planteado se evidencia al revisar sus referencias históricas, constatando que el tratamiento que ha recibido se caracteriza por una reproducción acrítica de su historicidad. Sin embargo, conceptos como identidad, clase social y herencias culturales, permiten reinterpretar al individuo a partir de las interrelaciones que existieron entre las distintas corrientes culturales en las que estuvo inserto. En esta perspectiva, el objetivo de la investigación es tensionar dicha mirada hagiográfica, para comprender al sujeto histórico desde su dimensión humana. El método histórico se construyó a partir de tres fuentes de información. Primero se analizó de manera crítica las referencias existentes sobre Lorenzo Arenas en la cultura escrita. Luego se analizó documentación inédita del Archivo Histórico Nacional (AHN). Finalmente, la documentación se complementó con prensa (El Sur) y documentación del Archivo Histórico de Concepción (AHC). De esta manera, la revisión de diferentes tipos de fuentes históricas, dan cuenta de distintos niveles de complejidad en torno a sujetos históricos que se suelen comprender desde narrativas heroicas.

          Translated abstract

          ABSTRACT The knowledge that emerged about Lorenzo Arenas Olivos from written culture has been nourished by an apologetic interpretation, built from the archetypal experience of a liberal citizen who was linked to different cultural spheres: mutualism, freemasonry and radicalism. This is evidenced by reviewing its historical references, noting that the treatment he received is characterized by an uncritical reproduction of its historicity. However, concepts such as identity, social class, and cultural heritage, allow to reinterpret the individual from the interrelationships that existed between the different cultural currents in which he was inserted. In this perspective, the objective of the research is to stress this hagiographic gaze, to understand the historical subject from its human dimension. The historical method was constructed from three sources of information. First, the existing references to Lorenzo Arenas in written culture were critically analyzed. Then unpublished documentation from the National Historical Archive (NHA) was analyzed. Finally, the documentation was complemented by press (El Sur Newspaper) and documentation from the Historical Archive of Concepción (AHC). In this way, the review of different types of historical sources, account for different levels of complexity around historical subjects that are usually understood from heroic narratives.
