          Abstract

          Neste estudo, avaliou-se a rugosidade superficial de resinas classificadas como compactáveis e uma híbrida tradicional comparando-se diferentes técnicas de polimento. Confeccionaram-se corpos-de-prova, que foram armazenados em água destilada por 24 horas e posteriormente submetidos a duas técnicas de tratamento superficial, em que foram empregados dois sistemas de discos de acabamento e polimento e pontas siliconizadas. Os resultados revelaram maior rugosidade superficial da resina AlertTM em relação a Solitaire® e Degufill Mineral®, não havendo diferenças estatisticamente significantes entre as últimas citadas. A rugosidade superficial das restaurações cujo polimento foi executado com as pontas Enhance® foi maior que o polimento obtido com os sistemas de discos, não havendo diferenças estatisticamente significante entre esses.

          Translated abstract

          In this study, the superficial roughness of two composite resins classified as condensable and of a traditional hybrid composite resin was analyzed after different polishing techniques. Test specimens were confected, immersed in distilled water for 24 hours and submitted to two different techniques of superficial treatment, in which disc systems (Sof-LexTM and Super Snap®) and silicon tips (Enhance®) were utilized. The results revealed the greater superficial roughness of AlertTM, when compared with Solitaire® and Degufill Mineral® - no statistically significant differences were observed between the last two materials. The superficial roughness of the specimens polished with Enhance® tips was greater than that of the specimens polished with discs and there were no statistically significant differences between both disc systems.

          New developments in resin restorative systems.

          Efforts have been made during the last several years to develop polymer formulations that could replace ceramic materials for the restoration of occlusal surfaces. In most cases, resins have exhibited insufficient wear resistance, whereas the ceramic materials have had a history of excessively abrading whatever opposes them occlusally. Based on recent clinical information, it appears that major successes have been achieved in reaching the goal. The author discusses these advances and proposes a possible replacement for amalgam, based on new technology.

            Comparison of wet and dry finishing of resin composites with aluminum oxide discs.

            Samples of four composites (Herculite, Visio-Dispers, Silux, and Prisma-Fil) were finished with aluminum-oxide discs either wet or dry so that the effects of these two finishing procedures could be compared. The samples were evaluated for surface smoothness, color stability, and surface hardness. Surface smoothness was determined immediately after a sample was finished with a profilometer. Knoop hardness values were determined for each sample immediately after being finished and once a week for five weeks. Color stability was evaluated with a tristimulus colorimeter by the color of each sample being finished and once a week for five weeks. When surface smoothness was compared between the wet- and dry-finished samples, there was no significant difference between Prisma-Fil, Silux, or Herculite; however, the wet-finished Visio-Dispers was significantly rougher than the dry-finished. When surface hardness was compared, there was no significant difference in hardness values between the wet and dry samples when compared over time. When changes in color were evaluated, only Visio-Dispers had no significant change in color for both the wet- and dry-finished samples over the five-week evaluation period. Dry finishing of only one composite (Silux) produced a significant change in color. Dry finishing of composites was superior or equal to wet finishing in all tests except for the color change in Silux.
