Eficacia ritual y efectos sensibles: Exploraciones analíticas a partir de experiencias perceptivas de los wixaritari (huicholes)

Abstract

Este ensayo se enfoca en los aspectos sensibles que caracterizan a diferentes acciones rituales llevadas a cabo por los wixaritari (huicholes). El uso y manejo de, por ejemplo, ciertos colores, formas, juegos de luces y sombras, sonidos y temperaturas son descritos en virtud del papel determinante que -se plantea- juegan en los contextos ceremoniales descritos. Además, se observa que en ocasiones algunas instancias sensoriales pueden cobrar vida o, dicho de otro modo, adquirir un cierto grado de agencia (agency, según Gell, 1998). En efecto, pueden manifestar la presencia de seres vivos, difuntos y/o antepasados-dioses. Se interrogarán los diversos puntos de vista que intervienen en estos contextos ceremoniales y desde los cuales se manejan aspectos sensoriales para lograr cierta eficacia. Así, desde un enfoque dinámico y fundamentado en la observación de las acciones concretas (sin obviar las exégesis al respecto), en el cual se consideran las acciones rituales como procesos creativos, se desarrollará un primer paso para reflexionar sobre las imbricaciones entre dichas prácticas y efectos sensibles. El horizonte más amplio de análisis en el que este análisis se sitúa atañe a las articulaciones entre arte y ritual. Para llevar a cabo este análisis, se retomarán fragmentos etnográficos observados en rituales muy diferentes practicados por los huicholes: actividades realizadas por los peyoteros durante sus peregrinaciones, en particular a la zona de Wirikuta (altiplano potosino); ceremonias de Hikuri Neixa (Danza del Peyote) y de Tatei Neixa (Danza de Nuestras Madres, también llamada Fiesta del Tambor); celebraciones de Semana Santa, y una "corrida del alma" (ritual funerario).

Translated abstract

This essay focuses on the sensorial aspects in a variety of ritual actions carried out by the Wixaritari (Huichols). For instance, the use and management of certain colors, forms, plays of light and shadow, sounds and temperatures are described in terms of the decisive role that they play in achieving the ritual efficacy of the ceremonial contexts described. Moreover, it is observed that on certain occasions, some sensorial modes can take on life or, following Gell (1998), acquire a certain degree of agency capable of manifesting the presence of living and dead beings and/or ancestor-gods. The different points of view that intervene in these ceremonial contexts and from which sensorial aspects are managed in order to produce efficacy are also interrogated. Thus, from dynamic focus, based on the observation of concrete actions (not omitting the corresponding exegesis), and in which ritual actions are considered as creative processes, a first attempt at articulating ritual actions and sensory effects is developed within a wider horizon of analysis on the articulations between art and ritual. For the aims of this analysis, ethnographic fragments observed in very different types of rituals practiced by the Huichols will be taken up: actions carried out by peyoteros during their pilgrimages, particularly in the zone of Wirikuta (in the high steppe of San Luis Potosí); ceremonies of Hikuri Neixa (Peyote Dance) and Tatei Neixa (Dance of Our Mothers or Drum Festival); Holy Week celebrations; and the corrida del alma ("running of the soul", a funerary ritual).
