Abstract

A sub-representação das mulheres nas esferas do poder político é hoje entendida como um problema político a ser enfrentado. De maneira esquemática, é possível distinguir três vertentes de explicação do fenômeno: (1) uma que enfatiza o caráter patriarcal subjacente às instituições políticas liberais, tal como na obra de Carole Pateman; (2) outra que foca os padrões culturais e de socialização que constroem o político como espaço masculino e inibem o surgimento da "ambição política" entre as mulheres, exemplificada pela literatura estadunidense sobre candidaturas femininas; e (3) aquela que destaca os constrangimentos estruturais à participação política das mulheres, que possuem, via de regra, menos acesso aos recursos econômicos e muito menos tempo livre que os homens. O artigo vai analisar as contribuições das três vertentes, advogando que o recurso ao conceito de "campo político", de Pierre Bourdieu, pode favorecer sua incorporação num modelo explicativo integrado e complexo

Translated abstract

The underrepresentation of women in politics is nowadays understood as a political problem to be confronted. In a schematic way, it is possible to distinguish between three axes of explanations to this phenomenon: (1) the one that emphasizes the patriarchal order in liberal political institutions, present in the studies carried on by Carole Pateman; (2) an axe that focus on cultural e socialization patterns that make politics a male field and prevent the building of "political ambition" between women, present in the studies about female candidates in the United States; and (3) those studies that underline structural constraints to female political participation, as they have, generally, less access to economical resources and much less free time than men. The article analyses the contributions in the three axes, advocating that the concept of "political field", in Pierre Bourdieu, helps their consideration in a complex and integrated model of explanation
