VIVIR Y MORIR CANTANDO: LA MÚSICA EN EL PENTECOSTALISMO CHILENO Translated title: Live and Die Singing: the Music in Chilean Pentecostalism

Abstract

RESUMEN El objetivo de este artículo es describir e interpretar el rol de la música en el pentecostalismo chileno, para destacar su relevancia en el fundacionalismo, su imaginario literario y su importancia y significados en los espacios y tiempos mortuorios, velatorios y postmortuorios. Nuestro abordaje, nos permite poner atención en la percepción de las realidades musicales, en los sentimientos musicales que transmite un individuo perteneciente a un determinado grupo y los sentimientos musicales que produce condicionado por las enfermedades, el dolor, la muerte, la pérdida y/o la miseria. Desde lo metodológico trabajamos con la revista Fuego de Pentecostés, perteneciente a la Iglesia Evangélica Pentecostal. Así mismo, incluimos dos novelas cuyos autores incorporan en sus narrativas personajes pentecostales y donde se destaca el rol de la música en cultura religiosa del movimiento. Ambas fuentes nos permiten enriquecer y complementar el rol de la música en el pentecostalismo.

ABSTRACT This article aims to describe and interpret the role of music in Chilean Pentecostalism to highlight its relevance in foundationalism, its literary imaginary and its importance and meanings in mortuary time and places. Our theoretical approach will focus on the perception of musical realities, as well as on the musical feelings that an individual belonging to a certain group transmits and produces when stricken by illness, pain, death, loss and/or misery. Methodologically, we worked with Fuego del Pentecostés, a magazine belonging to the Evangelical Pentecostal Church. We also studied two novels in which the authors included Pentecostal characters in their narratives and where music plays an important part in the religious culture of the movement depicted. Both sources have allowed us to enrich and complement the role of music in Pentecostalism.
