          Abstract

          Translated abstract

Abstract The desire to meet modern aesthetic but unattainable body standards affects mental health, because people internalize the ideals of beauty and accept social pressures about body appearance even beyond their well-being. The objective of this instrumental study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Sociocultural Attitude Questionnaire on Appearance (SATAQ-4) in the Colombian population, using a non-randomized stratified sample of 214 people, 138 women and 76 men, with an average age of 25.13 years (SD = 7.66). The Spanish version of the instrument validated in Argentina was used again, which was evaluated by expert judges to perform the linguistic adaptation and apply it to a pilot sample before the final application, made under the required ethical standards. The analysis of the psychometric conditions was carried out from the Item Response Theory, by using the Rasch model, and through the WINSTEPS software. The results indicate that the Spanish version fulfills the adequate psychometric conditions in the five dimensions that make up the instrument (.72-.94); and that the degree of difficulty and ability reach appropriate adjustment values, which indicates that the questionnaire has adequate psychometric conditions and maintains its original internal structure. In conclusion, the final version of this adaptation of SATAQ-4 can be used in a population of similar origin, in order to evaluate the effect of sociocultural aspects on satisfaction with body image.

Development and validation of the Sociocultural Attitudes Towards Appearance Questionnaire-4 (SATAQ-4).

The Sociocultural Attitudes Towards Appearance Questionnaire-3 (SATAQ-3) and its earlier versions are measures designed to assess societal and interpersonal aspects of appearance ideals. Correlational, structural equation modeling, and prospective studies of the SATAQ-3 have shown consistent and significant associations with measures of body image disturbance and eating pathology. In the current investigation, the SATAQ-3 was revised to improve upon some conceptual limitations and was evaluated in 4 U.S. and 3 international female samples, as well as a U.S. male sample. In Study 1, exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses for a sample of women from the Southeastern United States (N = 859) indicated a 22-item scale with 5 factors: Internalization: Thin/Low Body Fat, Internalization: Muscular/Athletic, Pressures: Family, Pressures: Media, Pressures: Peers. This scale structure was confirmed in 3 independent and geographically diverse samples of women from the United States (East Coast N = 440, West Coast N = 304, and North/Midwest N = 349). SATAQ-4 scale scores demonstrated excellent reliability and good convergent validity with measures of body image, eating disturbance, and self-esteem. Study 2 replicated the factorial validity, reliability, and convergent validity of the SATAQ-4 in an international sample of women drawn from Italy, England, and Australia (N = 362). Study 3 examined a sample of college males from the United States (N = 271); the 5-factor solution was largely replicated, yet there was some evidence of an underlying structure unique to men. Future research avenues include additional item testing and modification of the scale for men, as well as adaptation of the measure for children and adolescents.

The sociocultural attitudes towards appearance scale-3 (SATAQ-3): development and validation.

The goal of this investigation was to develop and validate a revision of a widely used measure of societal influences on body image and eating disturbances-the Sociocultural Attitudes Towards Appearance Questionnaire (SATAQ). Two independent samples of college females completed a revision and extension of the SATAQ and factor analyses were conducted to determine the underlying structure of the revised scale. Factor analyses indicated two distinct internalization factors: one appeared to reflect a generic media influence related to TV, magazines, and movies. A second factor clearly reflected internalization of athletic and sports figures. Two other factors, reflecting media pressures and media as an informational source, also emerged. Another widely used measure of thin-ideal internalization, the Ideal Body Internalization Scale-Revised (IBIS-R), was included in factor analyses to determine its empirical relationship with the revised SATAQ. None of the IBIS-R items loaded with any of the internalization items or items reflective of media pressures or information. Instead, the IBIS-R appeared to tap into an awareness of appearance norms dimension. The SATAQ-3 subscales had excellent convergent validity with measures of body image and eating disturbance. Eating-disturbed and eating-disordered samples had higher scores on SATAQ-3 subscales than a control sample. The SATAQ-3 measures multiple aspects of a societal influence and should prove useful for basic risk factor work as well as for gauging the efficacy of prevention and treatment programs.
