Abstract

En esta presentación se modifica aquella previa propuesta que reconocía dos glaciaciones («primera» y «segunda») en la región de la caldera de Caviahue-Copahue y sus adyacencias. Nuevas investigaciones han determinado la existencia de un único episodio glaciario regional. La desacertada interpretación de depósitos relacionados genéticamente con importantes movimientos gravitacionales en los valles de Huelcupén y Pilún-Challa, como pertenecientes a morenas terminales, constituyó sin duda un elemento fundamental para el establecimiento de aquella interpretación. Recientemente para la misma región, también basándose exclusivamente en los conceptos de la previa propuesta y sin aportar sólidos argumentos, se ha pretendido distinguir dos drifts, que se relacionarían con aquellas dos glaciaciones y que fueron denominados Caviahue y Trolope, respectivamente. Este informe aporta además nueva información geomorfológica y geológica de la región.

Translated abstract

The previous suggestion of their being two glaciations («first» and «second») in the Caviahue-Copahue region and neighbouring areas is modified. New studies led to the interpretation of a single glacial episode. Deposits in Hualcupén and Pillun-Challa valleys, related to a rock-avalanche and a huge slide respectively, were confused as terminal moraines of a «second» glaciation. The hummocky surface of those accumulations and their morphological similarity to moraine landscape, probably are the main reason for the misunderstanding. In another recent contribution, other authors also propose two phases of glaciation in the region (Caviahue Drift and Trolope Drift), without consistent evidence and based only on the earlier publications.
