      The Effects of Denture Cleansing Solutions on the Retention of Attachments of Implant Supported Overdentures

          Abstract

          Statement of the Problem

          Implant-retained overdenture can improve the stability of dentures and prevent bone loss. Overdenture-wearing patients need special hygiene care.

          Purpose

          The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of various denture cleansers on the retention of Dio orange O-rings.

          Method and Materials

          In this experimental study, 40 Dio orange O-rings were divided into 4 groups (10 O-rings each) and each group was soaked for equivalent of 6 months in the following solutions: 5.25% NaOCl (1:10 dilution), Corega cleanser tabs, Professional cleanser tabs and water (as the control group). After 6 months, O-rings were tested for 2inch/minutes of tensile force. The peak load-to-dislodgement was recorded. Data were imported to SPSS18 and were analyzed by One-Way ANOVA and Tukey HSD test ( p≤ 0.05).

          Results

          Denture cleansing solutions have significant effects on the reduction of retentive value of O-rings ( p≤ 0.001). Corega tabs caused the reduction of 15.7% (9.91±0.53 N) in the retentive value of O-rings and Professional tabs caused 15% (10.00±0.86 N). NaOCl caused significant decrease (48%) in retentive value of O-rings (6.10±0.91 N in comparison with the control group (11.76±1 N).

          Conclusion

          This in-vitro study demonstrated that the retention of O-rings was affected when soaked in cleansing solutions. NaOCl caused more reduction in retentive value compared to effervescent cleansers and would not be recommended for cleansing O-rings. These results should be interpreted clinically and the role of other factors in the retention of O-rings should be considered in order to recommend the best cleanser for O-ring overdentures.

          Oral hygiene habits, denture cleanliness, presence of yeasts and stomatitis in elderly people.

          The purpose of this study was to determine oral hygiene habits, denture cleanliness, presence of yeasts and denture stomatitis in elderly people. Seventy complete denture wearers were investigated clinically and mycologically. Subjects were evaluated according to, presence of denture stomatitis, presence of yeasts, denture cleanliness, frequency of denture brushing and denture cleaning methods. Swabs were taken from the palate investigated mycologically in order to identify the yeast colonies. No statistical relationship was found between denture stomatitis and frequency of denture brushing and denture cleaning methods. However, there was a statistically significant relationship between denture stomatitis, yeasts' presence and denture cleanliness.

            Materials and methods for cleaning dentures.

            Proper hygienic care of removable dentures is an important means of maintaining a healthy oral mucosa in denture wearers. Denture cleanliness is often poor due to improper mechanical cleansing and the relative inefficiency of most commercial products for chemical cleansing of dentures. Dentists and patients should realize that microbial plaque on dentures may be harmful to both the oral mucosa and the patient's general health. It is the responsibility of the patient to maintain oral hygiene through a daily home care routine. It is the obligation of the dentist to motivate and instruct the patient and provide the means and methods for plaque control. Future research should be directed to developing solution cleansers which can maintain plaque-free dentures with a daily soaking period of 15 to 30 minutes and not affect the color and surface luster of the denture acrylic resin.

              Denture hygiene: a review and update.

              Growth in the aging population has resulted in an increasing number of older persons requiring dentures. The microporous surfaces of an acrylic denture provide a wide range of environments to support microorganisms that can threaten the health of a physically vulnerable patient. The maintenance of denture prostheses is important for the health of patients and to maintain an esthetic, odor-free appliance. Mechanical, chemical, and a combination of mechanical and chemical strategies are available to patients to facilitate denture hygiene. Brushing is an ineffective method of denture disinfection. Household bleach or vinegar are effective as are the commercial, effervescent products sold for denture soaking. A new denture cleaner contains silicone polymer that provides a protective coating for dentures as a final step in the cleaning process. The coating helps to minimize the adhesion of accretions to the denture throughout the day until the next cleaning. Dental professionals must have a current knowledge of denture cleansing strategies in order to maximize the service offered to denture patients.
