          Abstract

          OBJETIVO: Verificar a prevalência de inatividade física e sua associação com estado nutricional, insatisfação com a imagem corporal e comportamentos sedentários em adolescentes. MÉTODOS: Trata-se de um estudo descritivo e de associação, conduzido em 595 escolares (196 do sexo masculino e 399 do feminino; com 14-18 anos) da rede pública de Florianópolis (SC). As variáveis independentes foram: idade, percepção da imagem corporal, estado nutricional e comportamentos sedentários (televisão, videogame, computador). Os adolescentes com menos de 300 minutos de atividade física por semana foram considerados insuficientemente ativos. A regressão logística foi utilizada para verificar possíveis associações entre a inatividade física e as variáveis independentes. RESULTADOS: A prevalência de inatividade física foi de 25,4% (masculino: 21,9%, feminino: 27,1%; p=0,20). Entre os rapazes, não foi encontrada associação entre o desfecho e as variáveis independentes. Em contrapartida, verificou-se que as moças classificadas como insuficientemente ativas apresentaram 2,55 vezes mais chance de ter baixo peso (IC95%=1,36-4,77). Além disso, a chance de apresentar o desfecho foi 1,67 vezes maior entre aquelas que permanecem mais de duas horas diárias assistindo à televisão (IC95%=1,03-2,71). CONCLUSÕES: Um em cada quatro adolescentes foi classificado como insuficientemente ativo. Apresentar baixo peso e permanecer mais de duas horas por dia assistindo à televisão foram fatores associados à inatividade física em adolescentes do gênero feminino. Sugere-se que os adolescentes, principalmente do sexo feminino, sejam orientados sobre a importância da prática regular de atividade física e de uma alimentação saudável.

          Translated abstract

          OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of physical inactivity and its association with nutritional status, body image dissatisfaction and sedentary behavior in adolescents. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 595 schoolchildren (196 boys and 399 girls; age from 14 to 18 years old) enrolled in public schools of Florianópolis, Santa Catarina, Brazil. The independent variables were age, body image perception, nutritional status and sedentary behavior (television, video game and computer). Adolescents with less than 300 minutes of physical activity per week were classified as insufficiently active. The logistic regression model was used to identify possible associations between physical inactivity and independent variables. RESULTS: The prevalence of physical inactivity was 25.4% (male: 21.9%, female: 27,1%, p=0,20). No association between physical inactivity and the independent variables was observed among boys. In contrast, girls classified as insufficiently active presented a 2.55 times higher chance of presenting low weight (95%CI=1.36-4.77). In addition, the chance of physical inactivity was 1.67 times higher among girls who watched television for more than two hours per day (95%CI=1.03-2.71). CONCLUSIONS: One out of four adolescents was classified as insufficiently active. Low weight and watching television for more than two hours per day were strongly associated with physical inactivity among adolescent girls. The results suggest that adolescents, especially girls, need to be advised regarding the importance of regular physical activity and a healthy diet.

          Worldwide variability in physical inactivity a 51-country survey.

          Physical inactivity is an important risk factor for chronic diseases, but for many (mainly developing) countries, no prevalence data have ever been published. To present data on the prevalence of physical inactivity for 51 countries and for different age groups and settings across these countries. Data analysis (conducted in 2007) included data from 212,021 adult participants whose questionnaires were culled from 259,526 adult observations from 51 countries participating in the World Health Survey (2002-2003). The validated International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) was used to assess days and duration of vigorous, moderate, and walking activities during the last 7 days. Country prevalence of physical inactivity ranged from 1.6% (Comoros) to 51.7% (Mauritania) for men and from 3.8% (Comoros) to 71.2% (Mauritania) for women. Physical inactivity was generally high for older age groups and lower in rural as compared to urban areas. Overall, about 15% of men and 20% of women from the 51 countries analyzed here (most of which are developing countries) are at risk for chronic diseases due to physical inactivity. There were substantial variations across countries and settings. The baseline information on the magnitude of the problem of physical inactivity provided by this study can help countries and health policymakers to set up interventions addressing the global chronic disease epidemic.

            Childhood predictors of adult obesity: a systematic review.

            To identify factors in childhood which might influence the development of obesity in adulthood. The prevalence of obesity is increasing in the UK and other developed countries, in adults and children. The adverse health consequences of adult obesity are well documented, but are less certain for childhood obesity. An association between fatness in adolescence and undesirable socio-economic consequences, such as lower educational attainment and income, has been observed, particularly for women. Childhood factors implicated in the development of adult obesity therefore have far-reaching implications for costs to the health-services and economy. In order to identify relevant studies, electronic databases--Medline, Embase, CAB abstracts, Psyclit and Sport Discus-were searched from the start date of the database to Spring 1998. The general search structure for electronic databases was (childhood or synonyms) AND (fatness or synonyms) AND (longitudinal or synonyms). Further studies were identified by citations in retrieved papers and by consultation with experts. Longitudinal observational studies of healthy children which included measurement of a risk factor in childhood (<18 y), and outcome measure at least 1 y later. Any measure of fatness, leanness or change in fatness or leanness was accepted. Measures of fat distribution were not included. Only studies with participants from an industrialized country were considered, and those concerning minority or special groups, e.g. Pima Indians or children born preterm, were excluded. Risk factors for obesity included parental fatness, social factors, birth weight, timing or rate of maturation, physical activity, dietary factors and other behavioural or psychological factors. Offspring of obese parent(s) were consistently seen to be at increased risk of fatness, although few studies have looked at this relationship over longer periods of childhood and into adulthood. The relative contributions of genes and inherited lifestyle factors to the parent-child fatness association remain largely unknown. No clear relationship is reported between socio-economic status (SES) in early life and childhood fatness. However, a strong consistent relationship is observed between low SES in early life and increased fatness in adulthood. Studies investigating SES were generally large but very few considered confounding by parental fatness. Women who change social class (social mobility) show the prevalence of obesity of the class they join, an association which is not present in men. The influence of other social factors such as family size, number of parents at home and childcare have been little researched. There is good evidence from large and reasonably long-term studies for an apparently clear relationship for increased fatness with higher birth weight, but in studies which attempted to address potential confounding by gestational age, parental fatness, or social group, the relationship was less consistent. The relationship between earlier maturation and greater subsequent fatness was investigated in predominantly smaller, but also a few large studies. Again, this relationship appeared to be consistent, but in general, the studies had not investigated whether there was confounding by other factors, including parental fatness, SES, earlier fatness in childhood, or dietary or activity behaviours. Studies investigating the role of diet or activity were generally small, and included diverse methods of risk factor measurement. There was almost no evidence for an influence of activity in infancy on later fatness, and inconsistent but suggestive evidence for a protective effect of activity in childhood on later fatness. No clear evidence for an effect of infant feeding on later fatness emerged, but follow-up to adulthood was rare, with only one study measuring fatness after 7y.               A method to assess energy expenditure in children and adults.

              A variety of studies has a need to estimate the amount and pattern of daily energy expenditure. To this end, a 3-day activity record was developed and is described. Every 15-min period over 3 days, including a weekend day, was qualified in terms of energy cost on a 1 to 9 scale corresponding to a range of 1.0 MET to 7.8 METs and higher. A reliability study of 61 subjects indicated a highly reproducible procedure as shown by an intraclass correlation of 0.96 for mean kcal of energy expenditure over 3 days. Repeatability was unchanged whether or not the hours of sleep were included in the record. Samples of 150 children and 150 adults were also drawn to investigate the relationship between energy expenditure, physical working capacity, and body fatness. Results support the hypothesis that mean energy expenditure per kg of body weight is significantly correlated with physical working capacity expressed per kg of body weight (r = 0.31; p less than 0.01). Mean energy expenditure per kg of body weight is negatively related to body fat (-0.08 less than or equal to r less than or equal to -0.13). It is concluded that the 3-day activity record is a procedure suitable to estimate energy expenditure in population studies.
