          Abstract

The disfigurement associated due to the loss of an eye can cause a significant physical and psychological disturbance. Psychological distress among such unfortunate patients can be reduced by providing an artificial eye. Rehabilitating such patients with an ocular defects is the most challenging task for a prosthodontist. The custom-made ocular prostheses are preferred over the prefabricated stock eye shells as it provides intimate contact with the tissue bed, enabling an ideal fit. For an esthetic ocular prosthesis, the precise positioning of an iris is a primary requirement to avoid the squint eye appearance. Various case reports are documented in the literature for centralizing the iris in the prosthetic eye. This review article explores the established methods and techniques for positioning the iris in a custom-made ocular prosthesis.

A simple method of positioning the iris disk on a custom-made ocular prosthesis. A clinical report.

We report two cases of ocular prosthesis fabrication that make use of a transparent graph grid for positioning the iris disk. The custom-made ocular prostheses achieved intimate contact with the tissue bed enabling ideal fit. As asymmetry may result in a squint-eyed appearance, proper positioning of the iris disk in the scleral wax pattern is vital to fabricating the custom-made artificial eye. The position of the iris disk in the custom-made ocular prosthesis was in symmetry with that of the natural eye, restoring esthetics of the patient.

Iris Positioning Using a Grid Attached to a Spring Bow for a Custom Ocular Prosthesis

Eyes are among the first features of the face to be noticed. Loss of an eye due to congenital, traumatic or pathologic aetiologies causes disfigurement and loss of sensory feedback. It leaves a psychological impact on the patient, thus prosthesis should be provided at the earliest to raise the spirits of the afflicted. Iris positioning is one of the important steps in fabricating customized ocular prosthesis. In facial asymmetry cases, comparison of both irises together can be a major disadvantage. This case report illustrates the use of a unique customized frame spring bow assembly to position the iris disk using the established parallelism between inter pupillary line to the horizontal plane.
