      Altrenogest en cerdas primíparas: efecto sobre la aparición de celo y el tamaño de la camada

          Abstract

          El objetivo del presente trabajo fue evaluar el efecto del tratamiento con Altrenogest sobre la aparición de celo y el tamaño de la camada en cerdas primíparas. Setenta y dos hembras (Landrace x Yorkshire) con un peso promedio de 155 ± 5 kg se asignaron aleatoriamente en dos grupos: GT = grupo tratamiento (n=36), al cual se le aplicó un protocolo de sincronización de celo con Altrenogest durante 18 días (20 mg/día) sobre el alimento y GC = grupo control (n=36). Se registró la concentración de los celos del grupo tratamiento para medir la eficacia del progestágeno. El número de lechones nacidos vivos (LNV), muertos (LNM) y totales (LNT) fue registrado en ambos grupos para su comparación a través de un ANOVA, usando el software estadístico INFOSTAT. No se encontraron diferencias significativas para el número de LNM y LNT, mientras que el número de LNV se vio favorecido por el tratamiento (p<0.05). El 91% de los celos se concentraron entre el cuarto y quinto día de finalizado la administración del progestágeno. Podemos concluir que el tratamiento con Altrenogest en cerdas primíparas, mejoró el número de LNV a la vez que logra concentrar eficazmente la presentación de celos entre los días 4 y 6 post-tratamiento.

          Translated abstract

          The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of Altrenogest administration on estrus manifestation and litter size of primiparous sows. Seventy-two primiparous sows (Landrace x Yorkshire) with a weight of 155 ± 5 kg were randomly assigned to two groups: 1) GT or treatment group (n=36) that received Altrenogest administration during 18 days (20 mg./day) in the food and 2) GC or control group (n=36). Estrus manifestation was recorded as well as number of piglets born alive, stillborn and litter size. ANOVA was used for mean comparisons using INFOSTAT statistical software. No differences between treatments were observed for number of stillborn and litter size whereas number of piglets born alive was increased by Altrenogest administration (p<0.05). Estrus manifestation was observed between fourth and sixth day following Altrenogest treatment. We can conclude that the treatment of Altrenogest in primiparous sows improved the number of piglets born alive and synchronized estrus.

          Current strategies for reproductive management of gilts and sows in North America

          Many advances in genetic selection, nutrition, housing and disease control have been incorporated into modern pork production since the 1950s resulting in highly prolific females and practices and technologies, which significantly increased efficiency of reproduction in the breeding herd. The objective of this manuscript is to review the literature and current industry practices employed for reproductive management. In particular the authors focus on assisted reproduction technologies and their application for enhanced productivity. Modern maternal line genotypes have lower appetites and exceptional lean growth potential compared to females of 20 yr ago. Thus, nutrient requirements and management techniques and technologies, which affect gilt development and sow longevity, require continuous updating. Failure to detect estrus accurately has the greatest impact on farrowing rate and litter size. Yet, even accurate estrus detection will not compensate for the variability in the interval between onset of estrus and actual time of ovulation. However, administration of GnRH analogs in weaned sows and in gilts after withdrawal of altrenogest do overcome this variability and thereby synchronize ovulation, which makes fixed-time AI practical. Seasonal infertility, mediated by temperature and photoperiod, is a persistent problem. Training workers in the art of stockmanship is of increasing importance as consumers become more interested in humane animal care. Altrenogest, is used to synchronize the estrous cycle of gilts, to prolong gestation for 2–3 d to synchronize farrowing and to postpone post-weaning estrus. P.G. 600® is used for induction of estrus in pre-pubertal gilts and as a treatment to overcome seasonal anestrous. Sperm cell numbers/dose of semen is significantly less for post cervical AI than for cervical AI. Real-time ultrasonography is used to determine pregnancy during wk 3–5. PGF2α effectively induces farrowing when administered within two d of normal gestation length. Ovulation synchronization, single fixed-time AI and induced parturition may lead to farrowing synchronization, which facilitates supervision and reduces stillbirths and piglet mortality. Attendance and assistance at farrowing is important especially to ensure adequate colostrum consumption by piglets immediately after birth. New performance terminologies are presented.

              Effect of birth litter size, birth parity number, growth rate, backfat thickness and age at first mating of gilts on their reproductive performance as sows.

              The present study was performed to evaluate retrospectively the influence of birth litter size, birth parity number, performance test parameters (growth rate from birth to 100kg body weight and backfat thickness at 100kg body weight) and age at first mating (AFM) of gilts on their reproductive performance as sows. Traits analysed included remating rate in gilts (RRG), litter size, weaning-to-first-service interval (WSI), remating rate in sows and farrowing rate (FR). Data were collected from 11 Swedish Landrace (L) and 8 Swedish Yorkshire (Y) nucleus herds and included 20712 farrowing records from sow parities 1-5. Sows that farrowed for the first time during 1993-1997, having complete records of performance test and AFM, were followed up to investigate their subsequent reproductive performance until their last farrowing in 1999. Analysis of variance and multiple regression were applied to continuous data. Logistic regression was applied to categorical data. The analyses were based on the same animals and the records were split into six groups of females, i.e. gilts, primiparous sows, and sows in parities 2-5, respectively. Each additional piglet in the litter in which the gilt was born was associated with an increase of her own litter size of between 0.07 and 0.1 piglets per litter (P<0.001). Gilts born from sow parity 1 had a longer WSI as primiparous sows compared with gilts born from sow parity 4 (0.3 days; P<0.05) or parity 5 (0.4 days; P<0.01). Gilts with a higher growth rate of up to 100kg body weight had a larger litter size (all parities 1-5; P<0.05), shorter WSI (all parities 1-5; P<0.05) and higher FR (parities 2 and 5; P<0.05) than gilts with a lower growth rate. Gilts with a high backfat thickness at 100kg body weight had a shorter WSI as primiparous sows (P<0.001) compared with low backfat gilts, and 0.1 piglets per litter more as second parity sows (P<0.01). A 10 day increase in AFM resulted in an increase in litter size of about 0.1 piglet for primiparous sows (P<0.001) and a decrease (P<0.05) for sow parities 4 and 5.
