          Abstract

          Translated abstract

The goal of this study was to characterize the population of preschool children who sought the psychological school-clinic at a public university in the state of Paraná in the period from August 2004 to May 2006. The data were collected through an identification record of the child and the CBCL (Child Behavior Checklist), versions of 1 ½ to 5 years and 4 to 18 years, which provides a behavioral profile through a computerized analysis. The research project's participants were 103 mothers with children of preschool age (2 to 6 years), who were interviewed individually and asked to fill in the CBCL. The study corroborated data from previous research, since most of the children were in fact evaluated by the instrument as being clinical and maintained some characteristics, such as higher prevalence of male children and predominance of externalizing over internalizing behavior

Follow-up of hard-to-manage preschoolers: adjustment at age 9 and predictors of continuing symptoms.

Hard-to-manage preschoolers and controls, studied initially at age 3 and followed up at school entry, were followed up again at age 9. Maternal interviews indicated that 67% of the hard-to-manage preschoolers who showed clinically significant problems at age 6 met DSM-III criteria for an externalizing disorder at age 9. Maternal and teacher ratings confirmed the diagnostic data. Hard-to-manage youngsters who had improved by age 6 did not differ from comparison children on maternal or teacher reports. Regression analyses indicated that earlier child behavior, maternal behavior, symptom ratings, and ongoing family stress predicted current symptoms of disorder.

Psychosocial determinants of behaviour problems in Brazilian preschool children.

This investigation aimed at examining, through an epidemiological study, the social demographic, family and individual determinants of behaviour problems in preschool children. Six hundred and thirty-four children, age four years, and their mothers, belonging to a cohort of 5,304 children being followed from birth, took part in the study. During a home visit, the child's behaviour problems and IQ were examined, as well as the prevalence of maternal psychiatric disorder, the quality of the home environment, and other social demographic, family and individual factors. The results revealed a prevalence of children's behaviour problems of 24% (clinical and borderline groups). Regression analysis showed that maternal psychiatric disorder, education and age, number of younger siblings and quality of the home environment explained 28% of the variance of the child's behaviour problems. The results point to the multi-determination of child behaviour problems.
