          Abstract

          Cutaneous mixed tumor or chondroid syringoma is a rare benign, skin appendageal tumor prevalent in areas of the head and neck. It represents the cutaneous counterpart of the pleomorphic adenoma of salivary glands. Its clinical presentation often misguides the clinician to underdiagnose it as a reactive lesion. We report the case of a 94-year-old male admitted for excision of cutaneous carcinoma concurrently with a chondroid syringoma of the pinna provisionally misdiagnosed as a keloid.

          Benign chondroid syringoma affecting the upper lip: Report of a rare case and review of literature

          Chondroid syringoma (CS) (mixed tumor of the skin) is a rare neoplasm of the sweat glands, which presents itself as a slow-growing, painless, nonulcerated, subcutaneous or intracutaneous mass often occurring in the head and neck region. The clinician may miss the diagnosis of this lesion due to its rarity. CS should be considered in the differential diagnosis of any subcutaneous nodules, especially in the head and neck region. The diagnosis of CS is mainly based on the histopathologic examination. This article presents a 35-year-old male with a mass on the upper lip that was histopathologically diagnosed as an apocrine variant of benign CS with squamous metaplasia after surgical excision. No sign of recurrence is evident till date during the follow-up. We report this case because of its rarity. A brief literature review and all the reported cases in the lip have been listed.

            Malignant chondroid syringoma of the pinna

            Chondroid syringoma (CS) represents the cutaneous counterpart of mixed tumor (pleomorphic adenoma) of salivary glands. The malignant counterpart of CS, termed as “malignant CS” is a malignant eccrine neoplasm which lacks distinctive clinical features, often delaying initial diagnosis. Unlike its benign counterpart which often localizes in the head and neck region, malignant CS most often encountered in the trunk and the extremities. We report a rare case of an aggressive malignant CS of the left pinna with cervical lymph node metastasis. Our patient, to the best of our knowledge, possibly is the first case of malignant CS of the pinna and the fourth to arise in the head and neck region. The diagnostic challenges with an added emphasis on the role of positron emission tomography-computed tomography in aiding the management of this rare tumor are discussed.

              Mixed tumour of the skin of the lower lip: A case report and review of the literature

              Mixed tumour of the skin or chondroid syringoma (CS) is a rare and mostly benign neoplasm of the sweat glands. Although CS is frequently located on varied parts of the head and neck region, the lower lip is a rarely reported site. The present report describes a case of CS of the lower lip in a 58-year-old male as an expository case to further emphasise the need for proper diagnosis, appropriate treatment and prognostic evaluation. The patient presented with a round, non-tender, slightly hard and mobile mass beneath the mucocutaneous junction of his left lateral side of the lower lip. Radiology revealed a mass measuring 11x11x7 mm 3 in size at a depth of ~2 mm. Furthermore, magnetic resonance T1- and T2-weighted images showed slightly low and high signal intensities, respectively. A provisional diagnosis of benign tumour of the lower lip was made, and surgical excision biopsy taken under local anaesthesia, while considering the patient's cosmetic appearance. Histopathology demonstrated features akin to apocrine gland, chondroid and myxoid stroma consistent with the diagnosis of benign CS. No evidence of recurrence or satellites were recorded after a follow-up of nearly 2 years. Although rare, a high index of suspicion for CS among other cutaneous adnexal tumours of the lower lip is necessary. In addition, interprofessional collaboration in the management of such oral tumours could enhance patient satisfaction amid prevailing intraoral and aesthetic concerns.
