Abstract

Diferenças marcantes entre os graus de consistência do solo seco e úmido foram incorporadas ao sistema brasileiro de classificação de solos por meio da utilização do termo "coeso", o qual caracteriza solos que, quando secos, apresentam um incremento acentuado de resistência à penetração, e uma sensível redução dessa resistência, quando úmidos. Esse comportamento foi observado, há muito tempo, em solos da Austrália, tendo sido originalmente incorporado ao sistema australiano de classificação como "hardsetting". O objetivo deste trabalho foi mostrar as similaridades entre solos coesos e "hardsetting", com o entendimento de que essa conexão será útil nas pesquisas com solos coesos no Brasil.

Translated abstract

Remarkable differences on soil consistence between dry and moist soils were incorporated to the Brazilian soil classification system identifying this behavior as "coeso" which characterizes soils that have an accentuated increment of resistance when dry and become soft when moist. This behavior has been recognized for longer time in Australia and was incorporated to the Australian soil classification system using the term hardsetting. The objective of this paper was to demonstrate the similarities between hardsetting and "coeso" soils with the understanding that this connection may help the research on "coeso" soils of Brazil.
