Abstract

Resumo Este artigo propõe apresentar o percurso de constituição da inglesa Economic History Society, primeira associação de história econômica do mundo, levando em conta o ambiente intelectual em que estavam imersos seus pesquisadores e estabelecendo o embate entre as lideranças fundadoras da história econômica e os economistas ingleses. A institucionalização da história econômica na Inglaterra, por meio da formação de sua associação, da promoção de congressos e de publicações de revistas direcionadas para a comunidade, deve ser encarada, não somente como um indicador da vitalidade da área por conta da organização dos pesquisadores, da disseminação de resultados de pesquisa e da presença de seus pesquisadores no debate dos grandes temas da sociedade, mas também como um instrumento de proteção e de valorização da área.

Abstract The paper presents the trajectory of Economic History Society development, the world’s first Economic History association, taking into account the intellectual environment in which the founding leaders were immersed and the debates between economic historians and economists in England. The institutionalization of Economic History in England, through the creation of its association, the organization of congresses and publications oriented to the community, should be seen not only as an indicator of the field’s vitality due to the organization of researchers, the dissemination of research findings and the presence of their respective researchers on the debate of major topics regarding society, but also as an instrument of protection and valuation of the field.
