Abstract

A imagem sempre foi um dos principais meios de comunicação na história da humanidade, conquistando, nos dias atuais, importância extraordinária, em especial com o advento da Internet e a difusão da comunicação global. A invenção da fotografia permitiu, desde o seu surgimento, uma expansão gradativa na produção e no uso de imagens. A imagem fotográfica é polissêmica por natureza, isso é, pode ser passível de inúmeros significados. Para ser utilizada, necessita ser organizada, o que implica análise e tematização de seu conteúdo, indexação, armazenamento e recuperação. O presente texto aborda alguns aspectos conceituais e históricos da imagem e da imagem fotográfica e enfoca algumas questões relativas à análise e à tematização da imagem fotográfica.

Images have always been one of the most important means of communication in the human history. Nowadays they have gained an extraordinary importance, mainly through global communication offered by the Internet. The invention of photograph allowed a gradual increasing in the production and in the use of images. A photographic image has many meanings and must be organized to be used. This implies a definition of its analysis and theme of its contents, and indexing, storage and recuperation. This paper is about some concepts and the history of Images and Photographic Images and about some questions related with analysis and themes of photographic images.
