Abstract

Resumo: Neste artigo, propõe-se analisar a tradução do discurso da sexualidade no âmbito da legendagem, mais especificamente, a transcodificação de referências culturais a partir de noções de tradução cultural e feminismo, utilizando como corpus legendas do filme The Magdalene Sisters (2002). Escrito e dirigido por Peter Mullan, The Magdalene Sisters estreou no Brasil em 2004 sob o título Em Nome de Deus. Baseada em fatos reais, a trama narra a história de quatro mulheres encarceradas, por questões religiosas e morais, em uma instituição denominada Magdalen Asylum (Asilo de Madalenas) nos anos 1960, na Irlanda. O objetivo central deste estudo consiste, portanto, em analisar como a mulher é representada por meio da legendagem do discurso religioso e da sexualidade, investigando de que maneira os procedimentos de tradução - adotados no processo de legendagem do idioma inglês para o português brasileiro - refletem a desigualdade de gênero e a misoginia com base teológica que permeiam a narrativa. A análise qualitativa do corpus demonstrou que as variações de sentido decorrentes de variações gramaticais e das intervenções do/a legendador/a promoveram uma aproximação dos contextos culturais de partida e de chegada.

Abstract: This article sets out to analyse the translation of the discourse on sexuality within the scope of subtitling, more specifically, the transcodification of cultural references from a cultural translation point of view. This study adopts as corpus the subtitles of the film The Magdalene Sisters (2002), written and directed by Peter Mullan. In Brazil, the film was released in 2004, under the title Em Nome de Deus. Based on true facts, the plot tells the story of four women imprisoned for religious and moral reasons in institutions called Magdalen Asylums in the nineteen-sixties, in Ireland. The ultimate goal of this study is to unveil how women are represented through the subtitling of the discourse on sexuality. Furthermore, to investigate how the translation procedures - applied in the process of subtitling from English into Portuguese - reflects gender inequality and theologically-based misogyny, as well as the religious and moral ideologies that permeate the discourse on sexuality in the narrative. The corpus’s qualitative analysis of the corpus showed that the grammatical variations and the subtitler's interventions have promoted an approximation of the source and target contexts.
