      Estimation of Some Phytochemical Compounds and Antioxidant Properties of Leaves from Different Mulberry Varieties Grown in Syria

          Abstract

          The study was conducted to compare the chemical composition and bioactive compounds of leaves from different mulberry species grown in Syria ( Morus alba, Morus nigra, Morus rubra, and Morus nigra sp). The leaves were collected in July 2022 and their proximate composition (moisture, ash, lipids, and protein), total polyphenol content (TPC), ascorbic acid, and antioxidant activity, as measured by ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), were investigated. The results showed that the moisture, ash, and fat content ranged from 61.84 to 71.17%, 12.87 to 17.61%, and 3.82 to 9.68% dry weight (DW), respectively. The phenolic concentration of leaves from four different mulberry cultivars varied significantly, from 164.9 ( Morus alba) to 461.5 gallic acid equivalents mg/100 g DW ( M. nigra). The antioxidant activity of mulberry leaves ranged from 122 to 166.3 meq ascorbic acid/100 g DW and was arranged as follows: M. rubra >  M. nigra sp >  M. nigra >  M. alba. According to the findings, mulberry leaves could be used to create new food supplements, functional foods, and medical applications.

          Phenolic Compounds in Brassica Vegetables

          Phenolic compounds are a large group of phytochemicals widespread in the plant kingdom. Depending on their structure they can be classified into simple phenols, phenolic acids, hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives and flavonoids. Phenolic compounds have received considerable attention for being potentially protective factors against cancer and heart diseases, in part because of their potent antioxidative properties and their ubiquity in a wide range of commonly consumed foods of plant origin. The Brassicaceae family includes a wide range of horticultural crops, some of them with economic significance and extensively used in the diet throughout the world. The phenolic composition of Brassica vegetables has been recently investigated and, nowadays, the profile of different Brassica species is well established. Here, we review the significance of phenolic compounds as a source of beneficial compounds for human health and the influence of environmental conditions and processing mechanisms on the phenolic composition of Brassica vegetables.

              Proximate Composition and Antioxidant Potential of Leaves from Three Varieties of Mulberry (Morus sp.): A Comparative Study

              In this study, leaves of three indigenous varieties of Mulberry namely, Morus alba L., Morus nigra L. and Morus rubra L. were investigated for their antioxidant potential and their proximate composition was determined. The yields of 80% methanolic extracts ranged between 8.28–13.89%. The contents of total phenolics (TPC), total flavonoids (TFC) and ascorbic acid (AA) ranged between 16.21–24.37 mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/g, 26.41–31.28 mg rutin equivalent (RE)/g and 0.97–1.49 mg/g, respectively. The antioxidant activity of leaf extracts was evaluated by measuring 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH•) radical scavenging actity, 2,2′-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonic acid (ABTS•+) radical cation scavenging capacity and ferric ion reducing power and values ranged between 1.89–2.12, 6.12–9.89 and 0.56–0.97 mM Trolox equivalent/g of dried leaves, respectively. The investigated features reveal good nutritive and antioxidant attributes of all the varieties with mutually significant differences.
