Abstract

A produção literária infantil com teor cívico se sobressai no conjunto dos primeiros livros brasileiros concebidos para atrair a criança leitora publicados desde os últimos anos do século XIX. Trata-se, na verdade, da maior parte da produção ficcional originalmente escrita para aquele público específico. Considerando este dado, o objetivo deste artigo é investigar conteúdos e estratégias discursivas, assim como aspectos editoriais e gráficos, com os quais se pretendia conformar um mercado que despontava com infinito potencial de crescimento. No curso da análise, procurar-se-á, também, sublinhar a especificidade e a dinâmica das relações entre alguns dos principais sujeitos envolvidos na produção, na circulação e na recepção dos livros infantis da passagem do século XIX para o XX: autores, editores e leitores.

Translated abstract

Books for children with civic content is a strong feature in the set of the first books designed to attract the young Brazilian readers, published since the end of the nineteenth century. In fact, these books represents the major fictional production originally written for that audience. Thereby, this paper aims to investigate the content and discursive strategies, as well as graphics and editorial aspects, which a potentially growing market should comply with. Throughout the analysis, we will also attempt to underline the specificity and dynamics of relationships between some of the key individuals involved in the production, circulation and reception of children's books of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century: authors, editors and readers.
