          Abstract

          Emotion regulation is an important aspect for the adaptation of human beings that influences their development and mental health. In actuality, it is an important challenge to have culturally valid instruments that allow to evaluate this construct. In this study, an analysis of the psychometric properties of the Children's Emotion Regulation Processes Survey (CERP) in a sample of Chilean preschoolers is presented. CERP is a third-party report questionnaire that assesses the strategies of emotion regulation in children, providing a vision based on development. The instrument was applied to mothers and fathers of 483 children, between the ages of 4 and 6 that attended preschool. Factorial structure, internal consistency and the relation with the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) as indicator of convergent validity was analyzed. The results showed a four factor structure, coherent with the empirical evidence. Also, all of the factors presented adequate reliability indexes and correlation with the internalization and externalization scales of CBCL. It is concluded that CERP exhibits positive reliability and validity indicators to be used in this population.

          La regulación emocional es un aspecto de relevancia para la adaptación de los individuos que influye en su desarrollo y salud mental. Actualmente, es un desafío contar con instrumentos válidos culturalmente para evaluar este constructo. En este estudio, se presenta el análisis de las propiedades psicométricas del Cuestionario de Procesos de Regulación Emocional Infantil (CERP) en una muestra de preescolares chilenos. El CERP es un cuestionario de reporte de terceros que evalúa las estrategias de regulación emocional en niños/as, entregando una visión basada en el desarrollo. Se aplicó el instrumento a padres y madres de 483 niños/as de edades entre 4 y 6 años que cursaban educación preescolar. Se analizó la estructura factorial, consistencia interna y relación con el Inventario de Conductas Infantiles (CBCL) como indicador de validez convergente. Los resultados evidenciaron una estructura de cuatro factores, coherentes con la evidencia empírica. Además, todos los factores presentaron adecuados índices de confiabilidad y correlaciones con las escalas de internalización y externalización del CBCL. Se concluye que el CERP muestra indicadores de confiabilidad y validez positivos para ser usado en esta población.

          A regulação emocional é um aspecto de relevância para a adaptação dos indivíduos que influencia em seu desenvolvimento e saúde mental. Na atualidade, um desafio importante é contar com instrumentos válidos culturalmente que permitam avaliar este constructo. Neste estudo se apresenta a análise das propriedades psicométricas do Questionário de Processos de Regulação Emocional Infantil (CERP) em uma amostra de pré-escolares chilenos. O CERP é um questionário de relatórios de terceiros que avaliam estratégias de regulação emocional em crianças, entregando uma visão baseada no desenvolvimento. O instrumento foi aplicado a pais e mães de 483 crianças, entre 4 e 6 anos que cursavam a educação pré-escolar. Foi analisada a estrutura fatorial, consistência interna e o relacionamento com o Inventario de Condutas Infantis (CBCL) como indicador de validade convergente. Os resultados evidenciaram uma estrutura de quatro fatores, coerentes com a evidencia empírica. Além disso, todos os fatores apresentaram índices adequados de confiabilidade e correlações com as escalas de internalização e terceirização do CBCL. Se conclui que o CERP mostra indicadores de confiabilidade e validez positivos para serem usados nesta população.

          The validity of the multi-informant approach to assessing child and adolescent mental health.

          Child and adolescent patients may display mental health concerns within some contexts and not others (e.g., home vs. school). Thus, understanding the specific contexts in which patients display concerns may assist mental health professionals in tailoring treatments to patients' needs. Consequently, clinical assessments often include reports from multiple informants who vary in the contexts in which they observe patients' behavior (e.g., patients, parents, teachers). Previous meta-analyses indicate that informants' reports correlate at low-to-moderate magnitudes. However, is it valid to interpret low correspondence among reports as indicating that patients display concerns in some contexts and not others? We meta-analyzed 341 studies published between 1989 and 2014 that reported cross-informant correspondence estimates, and observed low-to-moderate correspondence (mean internalizing: r = .25; mean externalizing: r = .30; mean overall: r = .28). Informant pair, mental health domain, and measurement method moderated magnitudes of correspondence. These robust findings have informed the development of concepts for interpreting multi-informant assessments, allowing researchers to draw specific predictions about the incremental and construct validity of these assessments. In turn, we critically evaluated research on the incremental and construct validity of the multi-informant approach to clinical child and adolescent assessment. In so doing, we identify crucial gaps in knowledge for future research, and provide recommendations for "best practices" in using and interpreting multi-informant assessments in clinical work and research. This article has important implications for developing personalized approaches to clinical assessment, with the goal of informing techniques for tailoring treatments to target the specific contexts where patients display concerns.             Coping, emotion regulation, and psychopathology in childhood and adolescence: A meta-analysis and narrative review.

            In this meta-analytic and narrative review, we examine several overarching issues related to the study of coping, emotion regulation, and internalizing and externalizing symptoms of psychopathology in childhood and adolescence, including the conceptualization and measurement of these constructs. We report a quantitative meta-analysis of 212 studies ( N = 80,850 participants) that measured the associations between coping and emotion regulation with symptoms of internalizing and externalizing psychopathology. Within the meta-analysis we address the association of broad domains of coping and emotion regulation (e.g., total coping, emotion regulation), intermediate factors of coping and emotion regulation (e.g., primary control coping, secondary control coping), and specific coping and emotion regulation strategies (e.g., emotional expression, cognitive reappraisal) with internalizing and externalizing symptoms. For cross-sectional studies, which made up the majority of studies included, we examine three potential moderators: age, measure quality, and single vs. multiple informants. Finally, we separately consider findings from longitudinal studies as these provide stronger tests of the effects. After accounting for publication bias, findings indicate that the broad domain of emotion regulation and adaptive coping and the factors of primary control coping and secondary control coping are related to lower symptoms of psychopathology. Further, the domain of maladaptive coping, the factor of disengagement coping, and the strategies of emotional suppression, avoidance and denial are related to higher symptoms of psychopathology. Finally, we offer a critique of the current state of the field and outline an agenda for future research.

              Emotion regulation among school-age children: the development and validation of a new criterion Q-sort scale.

              To foster the study of emotion regulation beyond infancy and toddlerhood, a new criterion Q-sort was constructed. In Study 1, Q-scales for emotion regulation and autonomy were developed, and analyses supported their discriminant validity. Study 2 further explored the construct validity of the Emotion Regulation Q-Scale within a sample of 143 maltreated and 80 impoverished children, aged 6 to 12 years. A multitrait-multimethod matrix and confirmatory factor analyses indicated impressive convergence among the Emotion Regulation Q-Scale and established measures of affect regulation. This new scale also was discriminable from measures of related constructs, including Q-sort assessments of ego resiliency. The use of this new measure was further supported by its ability to distinguish between maltreated and comparison children and between groups of well-regulated versus dysregulated children.
