Resumen: La idea de que las catástrofes son una oportunidad ya es casi un cliché; lo que nunca sabemos es quien se beneficia de ella. En base a los debates tras el terremoto de Valparaíso de 1906, este texto argumenta que, cuando la ciudad está destruida y se debe decidir cómo reconstruirla, aparece con mayor nitidez la diferencia entre lo que se valora y lo que no. La oportunidad, entonces, se transforma en un debate valórico.

Abstract: The idea that disasters become an opportunity is almost a cliché; what we never know is who or what will benefit from it. Based on the debates following the 1906 earthquake in Valparaíso, this text argues that when a city is ruined and decisions to rebuild must be taken, the difference between what is valued and what is not is clearly shown. The opportunity, then, becomes a discussion on values.
