          Abstract

ABSTRACT The present study explored the emotional response of Mus musculus mice, in the presence of a conspecific in need, (in forced captivity), when this consistently performed a release behavior, with and without the influence of a benzodiazepine (Clonazepan). Eight male rodents, members of the same litter, were divided into pairs and housed in an experimental chamber, where one of them was captive and the other was free. In the study, the behavior (emotional and rescue or release) of the free rodent was measured, throughout 20 sessions, 10 of them in the absence of the drug and 10 under its effects. The results indicated that the rodents develop emotional behaviors when they perceive that a congenerate is in a critical situation, and that they are capable of manifesting helpful behaviors. The inhibitory effects of benzodiazepine on such behaviors were also analyzed and the connotations of its effect were discussed.

Empathy and pro-social behavior in rats.

Whereas human pro-social behavior is often driven by empathic concern for another, it is unclear whether nonprimate mammals experience a similar motivational state. To test for empathically motivated pro-social behavior in rodents, we placed a free rat in an arena with a cagemate trapped in a restrainer. After several sessions, the free rat learned to intentionally and quickly open the restrainer and free the cagemate. Rats did not open empty or object-containing restrainers. They freed cagemates even when social contact was prevented. When liberating a cagemate was pitted against chocolate contained within a second restrainer, rats opened both restrainers and typically shared the chocolate. Thus, rats behave pro-socially in response to a conspecific's distress, providing strong evidence for biological roots of empathically motivated helping behavior.

Coding of facial expressions of pain in the laboratory mouse.

Facial expression is widely used as a measure of pain in infants; whether nonhuman animals display such pain expressions has never been systematically assessed. We developed the mouse grimace scale (MGS), a standardized behavioral coding system with high accuracy and reliability; assays involving noxious stimuli of moderate duration are accompanied by facial expressions of pain. This measure of spontaneously emitted pain may provide insight into the subjective pain experience of mice.
