      Criteria of metabolic syndrome teenagers at Islamic boarding schools East Java

          Abstract

          Indonesia has a high prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS) (13.3%) of the total population and has become a significant concern in this region. Importantly, the same daily lifestyle was found in the Islamic boarding school with a huge population of teenagers. This study aimed to identify the basic profile of metabolic syndrome in teenagers at the Islamic Boarding School in East Java Province, Indonesia. The baseline data from 200 senior high school students were addressed to measure the individual’s blood pressure, total cholesterol level, BMI, fasting blood glucose level, HDL level, LDL level, and triglyceride level in the circulation. The results of this study showed that BMI, systolic, and diastolic blood pressure were significantly different in subjects with overweight-obesity symptoms (p<0.01). Moreover, the circulating levels of HDL, triglycerides, total cholesterol, and fasting blood levels were not significantly different between groups. To sum up, this preliminary non-clinical data found that the potential of metabolic syndrome at Islamic Boarding Schools may become a major concern in preventing the gradual increase of metabolic diseases in younger ages. Hence, this Islamic institution’s nutritional policy and student physical activity program may become the primary target against metabolic syndrome.

          Metabolic syndrome: pathophysiology, management, and modulation by natural compounds

          Metabolic syndrome (MetS) represents a cluster of metabolic abnormalities that include hypertension, central obesity, insulin resistance, and atherogenic dyslipidemia, and is strongly associated with an increased risk for developing diabetes and atherosclerotic and nonatherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (CVD). The pathogenesis of MetS involves both genetic and acquired factors that contribute to the final pathway of inflammation that leads to CVD. MetS has gained significant importance recently due to the exponential increase in obesity worldwide. Early diagnosis is important in order to employ lifestyle and risk factor modification. Here, we review the epidemiology and pathogenesis of MetS, the role of inflammation in MetS, and summarize existing natural therapies for MetS.

            Metabolic syndrome.

            Metabolic syndrome is not a disease per se, but is a term that highlights traits that may have an increased risk of disease, approximately 2-fold for cardiovascular disease and 5-fold or more for type 2 diabetes mellitus. Obesity and insulin resistance are believed to be at the core of most cases of metabolic syndrome, although further research is required to truly understand the pathophysiology behind the syndrome and the gene-environment interactions that increase susceptibility. The mainstay of treatment remains lifestyle changes with exercise and diet to induce weight loss and pharmacologic intervention to treat atherogenic dyslipidemia, hypertension, and hyperglycemia.               Metabolic syndrome across Europe: different clusters of risk factors.

              Metabolic syndrome (MetS) remains a controversial entity. Specific clusters of MetS components - rather than MetS per se - are associated with accelerated arterial ageing and with cardiovascular (CV) events. To investigate whether the distribution of clusters of MetS components differed cross-culturally, we studied 34,821 subjects from 12 cohorts from 10 European countries and one cohort from the USA in the MARE (Metabolic syndrome and Arteries REsearch) Consortium.
