Abstract

El artículo considera que el carácter del innominado narrador-protagonista de Los pasos perdidos de Alejo Carpentier es el de un fingidor, carente de voluntad, que trata de engañarse a sí mismo y a los demás. La revisión de la función de algunos mitos clásicos, sobre todo las referencias a Sísifo y Prometeo, así como la actitud hacia quienes lo rodean confirman que el viaje iniciático no ha servido para convertirse en el otro que pudo llegar a ser. Al no ser capaz de superar sus propias limitaciones, así como las de su pertenencia cultural, el regreso a un mundo primigenio es imposible.

Translated abstract

The article considers that the nameless feature of Los Pasos Perdidos's writer-character is that of an individual that pretends to be someone else, lacking will, who tries to fool himself and everybody else. The review of the function of some classic myths, most of all the references to Sysyphus and Prometeus, as well as the attitude towards those who surround him, confirm that the initiation trip did not suit himself in order for him to become the other individual he would have been. As he was not able to overcome his own limitations, as well as those of his cultural pertinence, the return to a primitive world is impossible.
