      A double dissociation between action and perception in bimanual grasping: evidence from the Ponzo and the Wundt–Jastrow illusions

          Abstract

          Research on visuomotor control suggests that visually guided actions toward objects rely on functionally distinct computations with respect to perception. For example, a double dissociation between grasping and between perceptual estimates was reported in previous experiments that pit real against illusory object size differences in the context of the Ponzo illusion. While most previous research on the relation between action and perception focused on one-handed grasping, everyday visuomotor interactions also entail the simultaneous use of both hands to grasp objects that are larger in size. Here, we examined whether this double dissociation extends to bimanual movement control. In Experiment 1, participants were presented with different-sized objects embedded in the Ponzo Illusion. In Experiment 2, we tested whether the dissociation between perception and action extends to a different illusion, the Wundt–Jastrow illusion, which has not been previously used in grasping experiments. In both experiments, bimanual grasping trajectories reflected the differences in physical size between the objects; At the same time, perceptual estimates reflected the differences in illusory size between the objects. These results suggest that the double dissociation between action and perception generalizes to bimanual movement control. Unlike conscious perception, bimanual grasping movements are tuned to real-world metrics, and can potentially resist irrelevant information on relative size and depth.

          A new neural framework for visuospatial processing.

          The division of cortical visual processing into distinct dorsal and ventral streams is a key framework that has guided visual neuroscience. The characterization of the ventral stream as a 'What' pathway is relatively uncontroversial, but the nature of dorsal stream processing is less clear. Originally proposed as mediating spatial perception ('Where'), more recent accounts suggest it primarily serves non-conscious visually guided action ('How'). Here, we identify three pathways emerging from the dorsal stream that consist of projections to the prefrontal and premotor cortices, and a major projection to the medial temporal lobe that courses both directly and indirectly through the posterior cingulate and retrosplenial cortices. These three pathways support both conscious and non-conscious visuospatial processing, including spatial working memory, visually guided action and navigation, respectively.

            Hemispheric specialization in human dorsal frontal cortex and medial temporal lobe for verbal and nonverbal memory encoding.

            The involvement of dorsal frontal and medial temporal regions during the encoding of words, namable line-drawn objects, and unfamiliar faces was examined using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Robust dorsal frontal activations were observed in each instance, but lateralization was strongly dependent on the materials being encoded. Encoding of words produced left-lateralized dorsal frontal activation, whereas encoding of unfamiliar faces produced homologous right-lateralized activation. Encoding of namable objects, which are amenable to both verbal and nonverbal encoding, yielded bilateral dorsal frontal activation. A similar pattern of results was observed in the medial temporal lobe. These results indicate that regions in both hemispheres underlie human long-term memory encoding, and these regions can be engaged differentially according to the nature of the material being encoded.

              Differences in the visual control of pantomimed and natural grasping movements.

              In a series of experiments, we studied the differences between natural target-directed grasping movements and 'pantomimed' movements directed towards remembered objects. Although subjects continued to scale their hand opening for object size when pantomiming, grip formation and other kinematic variables differed significantly from those seen in normal target-directed actions. This was true whether the subjects had just seen the target object 2 sec before (Experiments 1 and 2) or whether the target object was still present and they were simply required to pantomime the grasping movement beside it (Experiment 3). We argued that these pantomimed reaches were being driven by stored perceptual information about the object, and were not utilizing the normal visuomotor control systems that direct actions in real time. This interpretation received strong support from observations of a patient with visual form agnosia who was also tested. In an earlier report, we had shown that this patient showed anticipatory scaling of her grasp despite her inability to discriminate between objects perceptually on the basis of size. The present study showed, however, that the requirement to remember an object even briefly, or to pantomime an action beside it, was enough to completely disrupt her visuomotor scaling (Experiments 2 and 3). That this reflected a failure of perception rather than imagery or understanding was supported by the fact that she could convincingly pantomime actions to imagined, familiar objects, the sizes of which were known to her (Experiment 4). All these results suggest that the mechanisms underlying the formation of perceptual representations of objects are quite independent of those mediating on-line visuomotor control.
