          Abstract

          Translated abstract

The depression, problem faced by nursing professionals, can determine work absenteeism. This study intends to identify scientific evidence on the occurrence of work-related depression among nursing staff and to characterize the leading aspects of this illness and the strategies used to prevent it. To achieve these objectives a literature review was performed through published studies in the indexed journals of the international bases, from 1995 to 2005. The research disclosed that the mental health of the nursing workers can be influenced by internal and external work aspects. The proposed strategies emphasize the administrative support, the interpersonal relationship and the proper work division among an adequate number of professionals. These strategies should be supported by a depression management, a work-related stress reduction and the implementation of the Occupational Health programs. The results contribute to the advance of the scientific knowledge and as an incentive for the accomplishment of new researches.

Correlates of fatigue in critical care nurses.

The purposes of this study were to examine shift-related differences in chronic fatigue and the contributions of sleep quality, anxiety, and depression to chronic fatigue among a random nationwide sample (N = 142) of female critical care nurses. Twenty-three percent of this sample met criteria for clinical depression. Day and night nurses did not differ in their reports of chronic fatigue. Night nurses reported more depression and poorer sleep quality than did day nurses. Regression analyses indicated that among the variables of global sleep quality, depression, and anxiety, depression and sleep quality were the most relevant to the explanation of chronic fatigue. These findings suggest the need for studies of strategies to promote sleep and improve mood in critical care nurses. Copyright 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Res Nurs Health 26:434-444, 2003

Effects of work stressors and work climate on long-term care staff's job morale and functioning.

Relationships between work stressors and work climate, and job morale and functioning were examined. Initial and 8-month follow-up data were obtained from 405 staff in 14 long-term care facilities. Relationship and workload stressors were related to less job satisfaction and intent to stay in the job, and more job-related distress, depression, and physical symptoms. Patient care task stressors were associated with better outcomes. More positive work climates were linked to higher job morale. Initial work stressors predicted poorer functioning, and coworker cohesion predicted more intent to stay in the job at follow-up.

The nursing shortage: a worldwide problem

A worldwide shortage of nurses has been acknowledged by the multidisciplinary Global Advisory Group of the World Health Organization. The shortage is caused by an increased demand for nurses, while fewer people are choosing nursing as a profession and the current nurses worldwide are aging. The shortage applies to nurses in practice as well as the nurse faculty who teach students. The inter-country recruitment and migration of nurses from developing countries to developed countries exacerbates the problem. Although public opinion polls identifies the nurse as the person who makes the health care system work for them, the conditions of the work environment in which the nurse functions is unsatisfactory and must change. Numerous studies have shown the positive effects on the nurse of a healthy work environment and the positive relationships between nursing care and patient outcomes. It is important that government officials, insurance companies, and administrators and leaders of health care systems acknowledge and operationalize the value of nurses to the health care system in order to establish and maintain the integrity and viability of that system.
