          Abstract

Abstract An effective methodological design is crucial for a research to produce valid data. Despite the vast literature on research methodology, studies discussing the methods specificities are still scarce, especially when it comes to psychology. This narrative review introduces the main types of designs used in clinical psychology research, as well as reflections on their usefulness in different contexts, presenting the approaches classification in a flowchart. This study does not seek to defend a taxonomy of the designs, but rather to develop a guide to deepen the understanding about the designs available and drive the choices among them, aiming to facilitate the communication among researchers. This work advances knowledge on the development of methodologically-conducted studies, as well as on the identification and improvement of the use of the various designs in clinical psychology research.

Research Design : Qualitative, Quantitative, and Mixed Methods Approaches

The eagerly anticipated Fourth Edition of the title that pioneered the comparison of qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods research design is here! For all three approaches, Creswell includes a preliminary consideration of philosophical assumptions, a review of the literature, an assessment of the use of theory in research approaches, and refl ections about the importance of writing and ethics in scholarly inquiry. He also presents the key elements of the research process, giving specifi c attention to each approach. The Fourth Edition includes extensively revised mixed methods coverage, increased coverage of ethical issues in research, and an expanded emphasis on worldview perspectives.

              Treatment of anxiety disorders

Anxiety disorders (generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder/agoraphobia, social anxiety disorder, and others) are the most prevalent psychiatric disorders, and are associated with a high burden of illness. Anxiety disorders are often underrecognized and undertreated in primary care. Treatment is indicated when a patient shows marked distress or suffers from complications resulting from the disorder. The treatment recommendations given in this article are based on guidelines, meta-analyses, and systematic reviews of randomized controlled studies. Anxiety disorders should be treated with psychological therapy, pharmacotherapy, or a combination of both. Cognitive behavioral therapy can be regarded as the psychotherapy with the highest level of evidence. First-line drugs are the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors. Benzodiazepines are not recommended for routine use. Other treatment options include pregabalin, tricyclic antidepressants, buspirone, moclobemide, and others. After remission, medications should be continued for 6 to 12 months. When developing a treatment plan, efficacy, adverse effects, interactions, costs, and the preference of the patient should be considered.
