          Abstract

In this paper, we aimed to investigate the linear and nonlinear optical properties of GO-ZnO and RGO-ZnO nanocomposites in comparison with pure GO and reduced graphene oxide (RGO). For this purpose, GO, RGO, GO-ZnO, and RGO-ZnO were synthesized and characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), Ultraviolet–Visible (UV–Vis) absorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). XRD and EDX analysis indicated the reduction of GO as well as the successful synthesis of GO-ZnO and RGO-ZnO nanocomposites. The FT-IR spectroscopy showed that absorption bands were at 3340 cm −1, 1630 cm −1, 1730 cm −1 and 480 cm −1 related to OH, C=C, C=O, and Zn–O stretching vibrations, respectively. The direct band gaps of GO, RGO, GO-ZnO and RGO-ZnO from UV–Vis spectra were at 3.36, 3.18, 3.63 and 3.25 eV, sequentially. Moreover, the third-order nonlinear optical properties were investigated using a z-scan technique with Nd: YAG laser (532 nm, 70 mW). It can be seen that the nonlinear absorption coefficient value \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$(\upbeta )$$\end{document} increased from 5.3 × 10 –4 (GO) to 8.4 × 10 –3 cm/W (RGO-ZnO). In addition, nonlinear refractive index (n 2) of the GO, RGO, GO-ZnO, and RGO-ZnO was obtained as 10.9 × 10 –10, 14.3 × 10 –10, 22.9 × 10 –10, and 31.9 × 10 –10 cm 2/W respectively.

          Improved synthesis of graphene oxide.

An improved method for the preparation of graphene oxide (GO) is described. Currently, Hummers' method (KMnO(4), NaNO(3), H(2)SO(4)) is the most common method used for preparing graphene oxide. We have found that excluding the NaNO(3), increasing the amount of KMnO(4), and performing the reaction in a 9:1 mixture of H(2)SO(4)/H(3)PO(4) improves the efficiency of the oxidation process. This improved method provides a greater amount of hydrophilic oxidized graphene material as compared to Hummers' method or Hummers' method with additional KMnO(4). Moreover, even though the GO produced by our method is more oxidized than that prepared by Hummers' method, when both are reduced in the same chamber with hydrazine, chemically converted graphene (CCG) produced from this new method is equivalent in its electrical conductivity. In contrast to Hummers' method, the new method does not generate toxic gas and the temperature is easily controlled. This improved synthesis of GO may be important for large-scale production of GO as well as the construction of devices composed of the subsequent CCG.

TiO2-graphene nanocomposites. UV-assisted photocatalytic reduction of graphene oxide.

Graphene oxide suspended in ethanol undergoes reduction as it accepts electrons from UV-irradiated TiO(2) suspensions. The reduction is accompanied by changes in the absorption of the graphene oxide, as the color of the suspension shifts from brown to black. The direct interaction between TiO(2) particles and graphene sheets hinders the collapse of exfoliated sheets of graphene. Solid films cast on a borosilicate glass gap separated by gold-sputtered terminations show an order of magnitude decrease in lateral resistance following reduction with the TiO(2) photocatalyst. The photocatalytic methodology not only provides an on-demand UV-assisted reduction technique but also opens up new ways to obtain photoactive graphene-semiconductor composites.
